Saturday looks like a good betting day. I think there’s a lot of false favourites across the card and there’s a few races I’ve picked out that look particularly interesting.
Race 2: Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m)
2YO colts & geldings
Performer (1) is very short and I’m just not convinced he should be that price. I wonder if 1100m might be a bit short for him.
Catanzaro (3) trailed alright, but isn’t good enough on last prep.
Exceltic (4) goes well and there’s a bit of a wrap on it – they think it’s potentially a Slipper horse. I think the market between those two will be a lot closer come the race.
Stratosphere (5) cost nearly a million dollars and is a Snowden horse, but the trials haven’t grabbed me and I’m not sure if he knows what he’s doing just yet.
Race 3: Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m)
There’s a lot of horses here that come out of the Gimcrack back in October, and I think that was an awful race – a provincial-level race basically. A lot of them haven’t run or have only had one run since, and I think that’s produced a bit of a false market here. That creates a bit of value.
Secret Lady (1) put in a very good run at the Gold Coast where it worked hard and raced well. I think it can cross and probably lead here. The only setback here is it has the 3kg penalty on the rest of the field. I’m not big on weight but that is something.
Fiesta (2) looks like it’ll get a good run but it does come out of the Gimcrack, and then was pretty well beaten by Legislation. Secret Lady has beaten Legislation so there’s a bit of a form line there, and I think it just looks a bit short at the moment.
I think Into The Abyss (3) might be hard to beat here and might be a pretty handy horse. It’ll muster within a few strides and could get across outside Secret Lady and if it does that, look out – it’ll be very hard to beat.
I think River Bird (6) could be a bit of an improver at big odds. Adamina (9) has trialled okay, as has Greysful Glamour (11). I’m So Sweet (12) was a very expensive horse and looks good. It could get a good run here and is some hope.
Race 7: Group 2 WFA Expressway Stakes (1200m)
3YOs and upwards
This has some of the older horses against some of the young three-year-olds. I reckon the three-year-olds look good: Addictive Nature (8), Trapeze Artist (5) and Ace High (4) could knock off the older ones.
Race 9: Fresh For Kids Handicap (1300m)
3YOs and upwards
This is one of the most interesting races of the day as there’s two horses there that are being talked-up as Group 1 horses this prep: Don’t Give A Damn (8) which has massive wraps, and Kaonic (12) who’ll they’ll be pointing toward a Guineas or Doncaster.
