Runners to watch: Randwick, April 8

Shane Adair's notes and blackbookers from Day 2 of The Championships.

Race 1 – Fernhill Handicap (1600m)

Whispered Secret (1st) – She sat three-wide and up on the speed, turning for home she gave a strong kick and was just too strong to the line. She has improved in all three runs this preparation and looks a filly that can be followed next preparation when over a trip.

Race 2 – South Pacific Classic (1400m)

Siren’s Fury (3rd) – Settled last in the field and was the widest turning for home. She unleashed a powerful sprint over the last 400m to only go down by half a length.  Her form this preparation has been excellent and this was a big step up in class from her prior event. Placed in similar or easier grade will be winning again very shortly

Race 3 – Percy Sykes (1200m)

Formality (2nd) – Easy in betting, she settled back on the fence about 4 – 5 lengths from the lead. Turning for home she copped interference and then again at the 200m had to squeeze through a gap. No doubt this cost her the race. She is a very talented filly and may be spelled after today. However she can be followed strongly next preparation.

Race 4 – Provincial Championships Final (1400m)

Pomelo (4th) – Finding her customary role in front, she went hard in the lead and strung the field right out. Heading into the straight she gave a good kick and looked set to figure in the finish, and was only run over in the last 150m. She is a high class mare and can continue to be followed. Willing to give another chance.

Race 5 – Arrowfield Sprint(1200m)

Impending (3rd) – Settled back in the second half of the field between runners, turning for home he was unable to find clear galloping room and it wasn’t until the final 200m he squeezed through a gap and exploded to the line to fill a place. He is racing really well without luck. Keep following.

Race 6 – Australian Oaks (2400m)

Bonneval (1st) – Settled towards the tail and was spotting the leader Lasqueti Spirit about 10 lengths turning for home. Down the straight she showed the class that won her the NZ Oaks, reigning the leaders in and coming away for a very easy victory. I think they will be looking at the big cups in the spring. Keep following.

Race 7 – Queen Elizabeth Stakes(2000m)

What do you say??? She is the best!!!

Race 8 – Sydney Cup (3200m)

Race abandoned.

Race 9 – Coolmore legacy Stakes (1600m)

Oregon’s Day (5th) – Settled towards the tail in the high and was set a big task turning for home. Heading down the straight she was unable to find clear running until the final 200m where she savaged the line. She has had only had the eight starts and all runs this preparation have been good, looks to be still on the up. Keep following

Race 10 – Sapphire Stakes (1200m)

Ravi (4th) – Settled midfield and no closer than 4 – 5 wide for the trip. Was entitled to knock-up into the straight but battled on very well to finish fourth. I’m sure she is the best horse in this race from a future viewpoint, and can be followed with confidence this preparation after this first-up effort.
