Runners to watch: Randwick, July 22nd

Shane Adair's race reviews, blackbookers and race notes from Saturday's Sydney metro meeting at Randwick.

Race reviews: Randwick, July 22nd

Race 1 – ATC Member for a day Handicap (1400m)

Note – The well tried Commanding Witness went like last weeks pay in front setting it up four length lead turning for home. The eventual winner Assimilate pulled to the middle of the track and unleashed a strong finish to win just over Dracarys who ran on well and will be fitter for that effort. Gresham ran on soundly into third. Backmarkers were entitled to run on due to the hot early pace.

Race 2 – TAB Highway Handicap (1400m)

Suncraze (1st) – Finally! After running  6 seconds in a row. Settled well back on a speed that was good, pulled to the middle of the track and let down quickly to score running away by 3 lengths. More wins in store for him if placed in the right grade. Continue to follow.

Note – Punters got it right with the well tried  Last Try Wins running second to solid favourite Suncraze. The second horse ran on well and has ability, can be followed. I won’t be looking any further back than those two.

Race 3 – ATC Owner Benefits Card (1100m)

Note – Memes lead from barrier to box in a good solid victory and continued her excellent preparation now bringing up 5th win since the spell. Clipper was good into second, however had her chance to win. Sangiovese who ran third worked to line without ever looking a winning chance. Not a race I can see a stack of form coming from.

Race 4 – Sydney Spring Carnival (1000m)

Note – Blow out here with $31 chance Salerno running on down the middle to score after Cudabeen looked the winner at the 100m. Hot favourite Super Too just went too quick for mine, fitter for that effort. Star Crossed was trapped wide however was disappointing. Pro Consul ran on well into third late.

Race 5 – Schweppes  Handicap (1200m)

Note  – Exciting finish with the two jockey premiership contenders going down to the wire and it was Avdulla on Argent D’or getting the bob in after coming from well back on the turn. Spending To Win was game running second. Chatuchak was good running third however every chance. Aquatic worked to line ok without ever looking a winning threat

Race 6 – ATC Heritage Volunteers Handicap (1800m)

Note – Punters got it right with the two favourites fighting it out. Sound Proposition fought off Loyalty Man in an exciting finish. They gapped the rest with Jacquinot Bay boxing on ok to hold third after setting the early pace. The winner was just too good in the end after being trapped a touch wide early. I wouldn’t be looking too much further than the first two in this event.

Race 7 – July Sprint (1100m)

Note – Jockey Andrew Adkins was the difference getting winner Boss Lane home in a tight finish, after he was able to hold Felines in a pocket and yet still manage to keep getting the best out of his mount. Petrossian ran home well to grab second. Felines in third was a touch unlucky being held up for abit however didn’t quicken once the gap opened. Kudero was sound running 4th after doing early work.

Race 8 – Winx Is Coming  Handicap (1200m)

Note – Speed was good here again which ensured winner Kings Of Leon who was well tried was able to get home, he did just!Settling well back in the field Bowman hooked him to the middle and he let donw well enough to score. Over a game Last Witness  who ran a much improved race to almost win. Torpenhow was solid running third without effort looking a real winning chance.

Race 9 – Handicap (1500m)

Francesco (3rd) – Sat midfield in the run and was trapped 3-4 wide for majority of the trip. Kept boxing on solidly to hold third position when entitled to knock right up. Peaking in fitness and if he can find a touch easier race next start can make presence felt. Keep following.

Note – Winner Pelethronius made it four in a row with a barn storming finish over the top of Invincible Knight who ran well again and is continuing to hold form this preparation. Admiral Jello was noticed making late ground and will be fitter for that effort. Favourite Steyne was held up abit down the straight and not totally writing off just yet this preparation, happy to give another chance.
