3M Open

This week on the PGA Tour is the 3M Open held at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota. Traditionally a low-key event, the line-up has been bolstered by a post-Open appearance from the likes of Tony Finau and Hideki Matsuyama.

3M Open 2021

The tournament is a relatively new event on the PGA Tour schedule and currently falls  on the back of “Major season” in the schedule… so it isn’t the strongest of events. That said, there is never a golf tournament which doesn’t generate player appeal and punter interest.

Prizemoney: $7.5m ($1.2m to the winner)

Field: 156

Highest ranked players: Matsuyama (14), Finau (17), Im (24), Hoge (47), Tringale (49), Theegala (62), Poston (63), McNealy (70)

2021 result:
-15 Cameron Champ ($101)
-13 Louis Oosthuizen ($15)
-13 Charl Schwartzel ($56)
-13 Jhonattan Vegas ($61)
-12 Keith Mitchell ($151)

3M Open 2021: The Course

Located in Blaine, Minnesota, the TPC Twin Cities is a 7,468 yard course played as a par 71. It was recently upgraded ahead of being added to the PGA Tour (prior to this it was a regular pit-stop on the Champions Tour. The venue was opened in 2000. It’s an Arnold Palmer design, with Tom Lehman on-hand as a consultant, and is a classic parkland course with tree-lined fairways. The course consistently ranked highly for birdie averages on the Champions Tour, so the expectation is for low-scoring this week.

72-Hole Record 263: Matthew Wolff (2019).

18-Hole Record 60: Paul Goydos (2017), Kenny Perry (2018).

3M Open 2021: The Weather

The four-day rain forecast shows a 0%-20%-50%-10% chance of precipitation during the tournament. Temperatures will peak in the mid 80s, with partial cloud cover all week. Wind speeds though will be moderate, expected to be between 12-14mph during the event.

Brendan Steele $34 with TopSport

39-year-old Steele is arguably the best ball-striker in the field this week. What will ultimately determine his chances of winning in Minnesota is the way in which he wields the putter – not always his favourite club! But Steele is on a good run at the moment (25-10-9-51-4-48-13-26 in his last 8 starts) and as a 3-time PGA Tour champion, the Californian certainly knows how to win. Steele was 53rd on his one previous visit to Blaine, but a R3 73 really scuppered his chances that week. Steele for me is a great value bet – if the putter behaves!

Wyndham Clark $41 with TopSport

Clark is long off the tee, ranking 5th for Driving Distance, and very useful on the greens, in 26th for Strokes Gained: Putting. And those two metrics together make the 28-year-old a very interesting contender this week. Clark arrives at TPC Twin Cities after a reasonably successful trip to the UK – 16th in the Scottish Open, then making the cut at St. Andrews – and despite missing the weekend on his last two visits to Iowa (with a poor R2 on each occasion), Clark was fifth on debut here in 2019. Definitely value at the price.
