Trial Spy – June 19 2019

Balaklava R3 #1 Heroes Quest ($101 win / $18 place)

Outlay: 0.2 units each-way
Profit: 23.4 units

Runner Comment: Trialled nicely when 3rd beaten 0.7L in time 9L above par, 3rd quickest of 11 trials on the day, beaten only by 2 black type performers, with 4L back to the 4th horse. Has mixed race form but could surprise after Morphettville May 30 1000m trial win ahead of this prep.

How It Panned Out: Heroes Quest led the field into the straight, stuck to the inside and simply just kept going! He got tired near the line but had just enough in the tank to hold off the challengers and salute at a massive early price.

Dean’s Winners – June 1 2019

Rosehill R7 #7 Hush Writer ($27.70 win)

Outlay: 1 unit win
Profit: 26.7 units

Runner Comment: First up over 2400m. Gai can do it and this horse has plenty of talent.

How It Panned Out: Hush Writer was a strong winner for Dean’s Winners members, leading a big field into the straight and kicking away on the bend. The talented runner started to tire near the line but managed to hold off some fast-finishing rivals for a great result.

UK Racing – May 17 2019

Aintree R1 #8 Included ($28 win / $6.40 place)

Outlay: 1 unit each-way
Profit: 31.17 units

Runner Comment: Just the evening meeting at Aintree today where it looks like they will have genuinely good ground. The opener is a mares handicap hurdle and it looks competitive, but I think one or two of these are well handicapped and I am backing Included. She has been off the track for a while but the trainer can get them ready no problem. She is a good ground horse and has been prepared for a summer campaign. The jockey booking is eye catching and I think she is still improving.

How It Panned Out: After settling on-pace, Included was held together well as she cruised up alongside the leader early in the straight before being driven out over the last jump to see off her rivals for a strong win.

UK Racing – May 6 2019

Warwick R2 #5 Golden Taipan ($30 win / $4.90 place)

Outlay: 0.5 units win / 1 unit place
Profit: 17.67 units

Runner Comment: The maiden is more competitive than the betting market suggests, and I am backing Golden Taipan each way. He will be a decent price and this horse has had a few quiet starts but looks ready to show his true form. His last run was encouraging and he will set behind the pace here and I think he is a potential rapid improver.

How It Panned Out: Golden Taipan settled midfield and never found himself too far away from the leaders. As the sprint went on, he looked to struggle initially before finding his stride and finishing off very well to see off the challengers, including a short-priced favourite, in impressive fashion.

Dean’s Winners – March 9 2019

Flemington R8 #6 Harlem ($41 win)

Outlay: 0.5 units win
Profit: 20 units

Runner Comment: Won this race at 50/1 for us in a big result last year, paying $100 Betfair SP.  Is going better this year. trainer has a great record in this race. Big chance.

How It Panned Out: The British import has struggled for consistency over the journey but had all his talent on display here. Underneath Jamie Kah, the gelding found himself in a thrilling scrap with Kiwi counterpart Shillelagh as they battled all the way to the line, sticking his neck out in time to claim top honours.

Key Bets – December 14 2018

Albany R7 #10 Molly Twohundred ($23 win)

Outlay: 0.7 units win
Profit: 15.4 units

Runner Comment: Nice run first up when she made up good ground over too short a trip 930m at Narrogin. She’ll map much closer to the pace today over this trip and she doesn’t deserve to be the price she is, well overs and lock it in.

How It Panned Out: As predicted, Molly Twohundred jumped well and led before pinching a length on the bend. Despite a wall of challengers inside the 200m, she held on strongly for a tough win at a great price.

NZ Tips – October 20 2018

Ashburton R1 #6 Attimo ($41 win / $8 place)

Outlay: 0.25 units win / 0.75 units place
Profit: 15.25 units

Runner Comment: The fav has a massive wrap and may well blow them away but $1.45 on a horse who is yet to perform on raceday means we shall spec a couple of on pacers.

How It Panned Out: While the short-priced favourite was well respected by Kiwi Chris, the value simply resided elsewhere. His predicted on-pace bias proved to be the right call with on-pacer Attimo taking out the race at massive odds and his other roughie selection also finishing 3rd for a place collect.

Key Bets – September 26 2018

Belmont R8 #16 Zetorio ($16 win)

Outlay: 1 unit win
Profit: 15 units

Runner Comment: I don’t know why this horse is double figure odds!! I make this quite an open race but I do have him top pick and I think he’ll be very hard to beat. Won his MDN well at NTHM LST rating 94 and I can see improvement off that, only having his fourth career run, big price!

How It Panned Out: Zetorio settled worse than mid-field before finding a gap and some galloping room around the bend. Despite wanting to lay in multiple times down the straight, he managed to sustain a strong run down the centre of the track and hit the line strongly.

Trial Spy – August 10 2018

Scone R2 #18 Cloud Cover ($101 win / $26 place)

Outlay: 0.1 units win / 0.3 units place
Profit: 18.5 units

Runner Comment: Trialled ok twice but has run terrible in two career starts. New trainer might bring a display of true ability.

How It Panned Out: Cloud Cover settled near the back of the field and looked a long way off the pace in the straight before rocketing home down the middle of the track to snatch victory in a very tight photo.

Trial Spy – July 14 2018

Gold Coast R1 #6 Rock The House ($41 win / $16 place)

Outlay: 0.5 units each-way
Profit: 26.5 units

Runner Comment: Had a positive trainer change. Had trialled well for previous trainer winning Gold Coast 1000m trial Nov 13 in time 1.6L above par, although race form terrible.

How It Panned Out: Despite poor racing form, Rock The House never looked like being run down after finding the fence and leading all the way, extending in the straight to gap the rest of the small field comfortably.

Trial Spy – January 13 2018

Gold Coast R8 #11 Sunlight ($21 win)

Outlay: 1 unit win
Profit: 20 units

Runner Comment: Looked good winning 800m Flemington Jumpout 28 Sep in good time. Won Cranbourne trial prior to that on Sep 4 by 2L in nice style also. Slow away on debut aat Flemington but ran a good 3rd. Won Gold Coast 900m trial Dec 7 under no pressure in quickest time of the day, 11L above par (Ef Troop 7L above par on same day). Beat a horse called Outback Magic who was ridden out, and then came out and won the Listed fillies race yesterday on debut. Sunlight was scratched from that race due to its wide gate. Trial form ties in very well and is a huge price currently. Note needs to run this Saturday and earn enough prizemoney to qualify for the race, but odds will shorten sharply and is a big chance in the race if does so.

Kurow R7 #13 Mother Superior ($34 win)

Trial Spy – October 5 2016

Northam R4 #3 Public Spirit ($45.20 win / $7.40 place)

Outlay: 0.5 units win / 1 unit place
Profit: 28.5 units

Runner Comment: Monitor the price. Was a nice trial win coming from last in Pinjarra 1000m Aug 22 trial in decent time. Ran last first up but had a cardiac arrhythmia and is much better than that.

Trial Spy – December 7 2015

Terang R5 #8 Another Diamond ($21 win / $6 place)

Outlay: 1 unit win / 1.5 units place
Profit: 27.5 units

Runner Comment: Bet365 $23, $21 everywhere else. $6 place across the board. Take best fixed. Two racetrack runs terrible, although set a cracking pace on debut, then ran off the track at second start. Sent back to the trials and won Colac 1000m Dec 1 trial by 4.5L in blistering time well above average, quickest for the day and beating some handy types. Repeat of that can win this.
