2011 AJC Derby Preview The 2011 AJC Derby has a great line-up of proven quality performers and some promising young stayers who are on the up. Let’s take a look at some of the main hopes: Jimmy Choux has won 7 of his 9 starts this campaign and one of those losses was due to injury. He is a three time Group 1 winner and most importantly is a winner over 2400m. His lead up performance was exceptional and although he has been in work for a while his runs have been well spaced. If you don’t mind taking the shorts you can back him with some confidence as he is clearly the one to beat. Anacheeva has been pretty dour this prep and although beaten at each of his starts this campaign he hasn’t been thrashed. It’s worth noting his brother Headturner won this race for John Hawkes in 2006, so the 2400m shouldn’t be an issue. Anacheeva is in the camp of master trainer Peter Moody and it’s hard to totally discard him here. Retrieve was excellent two starts back against Jimmy Choux before being beaten as an odds-on favourite last week when they decided to take a sit which most certainly didn’t suit. They will jump and run from barrier 12 and be prominent throughout. His run last start wasn’t as bad as it looks on face value and I am tipping he can bounce back to form here. I Think I Do is the Bart Cummings runner and I thought his run last week was very good. He looked to relax quite well and really looked to lengthen and hit the line well in the closing stages. He is certainly looking for the 2400m and being trained by the master it is more than likely that he will improve a long way and be very hard to beat here. Shamrocker is the lone filly who was able to run third behind Jimmy Choux and Retrieve last start. She has been able to beat the boys twice in her career already and was only beaten less than a length in the Oaks last Spring so the 2400m won’t be a problem. Boss goes back on and it is pretty hard to knock her here. Early selections: 1. I Think I Do 2. Jimmy Choux 3. Retrieve By Rick Williams
