Melbourne pro-punter Trevor Lawson brings you his preview of the inaugural All Star Mile from Flemington.
Put A Line Through...
As has been well documented, there’s a number of below-par runners in this race that simply aren’t up to the standards of the others. So we’ll start by eliminating Material Man (3), Moss ’N’ Dale (5), Foundry (6), Man Of His Word (7), Balf’s Choice (8), Mr Money Bags (9) and Urban Ruler (10).
Runner By Runner
#1 Happy Clapper (Patrick Webster / Blake Shinn)
Barrier 9, 59kg
Third-up here. Ran Winx to 1.8 lengths last start which is the best form in Australia, and has done that same figure four times now. I think he can hold that here. Gets Shinn on which is a big positive as he’s aggressive – from the barrier he should go forward and sit just outside Hawkshot. He’s at WFA here so not disadvantaged at the weights, he has a terrific record third-up and a terrific record at the mile.
#2 Hartnell (James Cummings / William Buick)
Barrier 2, 59kg
Ran okay last start, where he took time to get going and worked home okay. Won the Epsom third-up in the spring and can run up to that figure here.
#4 Grunt (Mick Price / Damien Oliver)
Barrier 15, 59kg
Looked disappointing on paper first-up. Very one-paced and I think he needs races run quickly. He has one massive spike figure (last year in the Makybe Diva), but don’t think he can run to that here.
#11 Alizee (James Cummings / Hugh Bowman)
Barrier 12, 57kg
Unbeaten this prep. Won nicely first-up then dominant second-up last start. – sat wide throughout and jock looked to give her as easy run as possible. No issues at the mile.
#12 Hawkshot (Hayes & Dabernig / Mark Zahra)
Barrier 4, 56kg
Ran well when allowed to lead two starts back then held that rating last start. Doubt can improve off that though.
#13 Mystic Journey (Adam Trinder / Anthony Darmanin)
Barrier 16, 54kg
Terrific win over 1600m in the Guineas. Looks to have wood on the other 3YOs and was very strong through the line.
#14 Amphitrite (Hayes & Dabernig / Craig Williams)
Barrier 14, 54kg
Looked disappointing on paper last start in the Guineas. Hard to see them turning the tables on Mystic Journey, even with the blinkers on.
Happy Clapper ticks a lot of boxes for me and I have him on top. He looks good value at the early price too.
