Flemington quaddie, horse racing tips june 6, horse racing tips june 20, winter championship series final

Run over 1200 metres down the famous Flemington straight in early August, the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap is always a sign that spring is not too far away!

The race is named after Auries’s Star, a star horse of the 1930s that had a number of big wins including a Newmarket Handicap, Goodwood Handicap and two Oakleigh Plates.

Although run over a sprint distance, the race has also attracted middle distance and staying types in the past, with trainers using it as a starting point for spring preparations.

Aurie’s Star Handicap 2022: Trev’s preview

Track They’ve put it up as Soft 6 early. There may be a little rain before raceday but with the way Flemington drains, the track won’t get any worse.

Speed There’s actually not much speed in the race at all. Sirius Suspect and Kalkarni Royale will lead, and the rest will just take the trail behind.

3 KING OF SPARTA [$2.40] improved last start off an ordinary first-up run, winning the Bletchingly. He’s good in the wet and has a good chance here.

5 SHOOTING FOR GOLD [$3.80] had no luck two starts back when he got well back before running the fastest last 200 metres of the day. Then he got caught wide last start. This is his first time the Melbourne way of going, but he does get Jamie Kah on.

4 SIRIUS SUSPECT [$5] is racing well. He has a good record down the straight and looks to be able to dictate this race.

2 STAGEMAN [$6.50] is an eight-year-old former WA galloper who resumes here. It’s nearly two years since he last won so I’m happy to watch and see how he goes.

7 KALKARNI ROYALE [$10] was okay first-up and can dictate this race. 1200 metres just might be a bit too far for her.

1 JUST FOLK [$15] resumes here with Craig Willaims and has run well first-up in the past. He won’t get too far back in a small field.

6 ROMANCER [$26] has been given a freshen-up into this. He’s a nine-year-old who hasn’t won for a fair while. I prefer others.

Betting strategy

Top pick Sirius Suspect

I actually have Sirius Suspect and Shooting For Gold equal on top here, so Sirius Suspect appeals at the price. His record down the straight is strong and he won here just a month ago.
