- The biggest names as we approach Autumn racing… what do the pro punters think?
- Comments from Mark Rhoden, Trevor Lawson and Cameron O’Brien
As the Autumn Racing Carnival kicks off, there’s a number of in-form or “hype” horses that we wanted to get an informed opinion on.
So we asked a few of our professional punters their thoughts… and if you fancy a long-term play, we’ve included the current Autumn futures prices from the good folks at TopSport.
If you really want to follow the pros this autumn, the only way to do it is with our Awesome Autumn membership. For one low price you get a set of five tips from our pro punters for every big autumn raceday. Click here for more info.
In no particular order…
1. Scales of Justice
Newmarket Handicap: $15
Futurity Stakes: $5.50
All Star Mile: $15
Cameron O’Brien: “Yet another WA horse to perform at the highest level in Victoria, he got to a rating of 119 last prep. If Smith has him back in that form again he’s in whatever races he is set for.”
Trevor Lawson: “Probably the best of the WFA horses at the moment. Returned with a good win first-up and didn’t rate up to his best, so we should see some improvement in this prep.”
Who could forget Scales Of Justice’s win in the 2016 Railway Stakes?! The @LSmithRacing-trained gelding has gone from strength to strength since that moment and the next logical step is the @allstarmile, but he needs your vote!

2. Nature Strip
Black Caviar Lightning Stakes: $1.65
Newmarket Handicap: $6.50
TJ Smith Stakes: $9
Cameron O’Brien: “Smashed the clock with the highest rating of 2019 – and that includes Winx – going 124 at Flemington in the Sprint. He is obviously enigmatic, however no one is beating him when he pulls out 124s.”
Trevor Lawson: “Quite simply the best sprinter around. Best speed figures and goes best when it’s left alone in front.”

3. Kolding
Futurity Stakes: $6
All Star Mile: $7.50
Doncaster Mile: $8.50
Queen Elizabeth Stakes: $11
Mark Rhoden: “Was solid enough in the market in the Expressway on Saturday, and although he was beaten he certainly did enough to suggest he’s come back in good order… and 1200 metres isn’t his go at this level either. He’s early favourite for the Doncaster but with his increased handicap rating this preparation, he’ll better placed in WFA races like the All Star Mile and perhaps the Ranvet at 2000 metres.”
“Yep sure is (@allstarmile the target). 1200m is a bit short for him but he’s come through the race well and his next run will be in the Futurity at Caulfield.”

4. Castelvecchio
Rosehill Guineas: $4.60
Australian Guineas: $14
All Star Mile: $17
Doncaster Mile: $14
Queen Elizabeth Stakes: $7
Mark Rhoden: “The middle-distance / staying three-year-old I’m most looking forward to seeing this autumn. His outstanding run in the Cox Plate demonstrated his ability, and the Queen Elizabeth over the same trip is going to be his target this time in, with a possible detour via the Derby.”
Castelvecchio’s future at @ArrowfieldStud beckons but not before dazzling on the track for a little while longer.

5. Cellsabeel
Blue Diamond Stakes: $15
ATC Sires Produce: $6.50
Golden Slipper: $5
Mark Rhoden: “The best two-year-old we’ve seen this season – she’s made huge improvement between her spring debut and her first-up run this time in. I won’t be stepping into a short price about her in the Inglis race on Saturday, however – she could be flat second-up, or run into traffic on a very wet track and there’s just not much upside. Has the ability to be a major player in whatever she contests though.”
How impressive was that?! 😮

6. Alligator Blood
Australian Guineas: $4
Rosehill Guineas: $7
All Star Mile: $6
Doncaster Mile: $13
Queen Elizabeth Stakes: $20
Trevor Lawson: “He’s the best three-year-old and just a star. Huge run in the Guineas and looks to have come back better again. Perfect WFA horse going forward because he races on the pace and has a turn of foot. It’s deadly over 1200 – 1400 metres – and perhaps even further.”
