Ballarat Cup 2021: Pro punter preview
Pro punter Trevor Lawson gives us his thoughts on the 2021 Ballarat Cup.
It’s not a bad race this year. It’s reasonably typical Ballarat Cup standard… I think they’d be quite happy with the field.
Ballarat Cup: The track
Its now looks like the major rain will come Sunday, so I’m working on the track just having the give out of it. Traditionally when Ballarat is in decent condition it suits those up on the pace.
Ballarat Cup: The speed
Thought Of That should lead uncontested. There’s not really any other attackers so Meech will lead at her own tempo.
Ballarat Cup: Runner by runner
YONKERS is okay at this distance range, but has plenty of weight here. Only a very rough chance.
DEFIBRILLATE is another one up in the weights. This trip suits.. he races well at this distance. Rough claims
HANG MAN should be fitter third-up, but I’m not sure he can run to his absolute best. An outside chance.
QUANTUM MECHANIC is stepping to this distance for the first time, which might not be a positive. He’ll get back on the map. Prefer others.
ZAYYDANI is racing well, winning the Matriarch Stakes at Flemington last start. I’m not sure she can improve again however, which she would need to do to be a real winning chance here.

DOUBLE YOU TEE looks ready to run to his best. But even with that, he’s another who would need a few here to regress in order to be a true winning chance.
VANNA GIRL is having her second run at the trip this prep, which should deliver improvement. Again though, she’d need a few here to rate down for her to be a chance.
THOUGHT OF THAT has returned to form since they reverted to leading. He looks the natural leader here and Meech has a good record on the hrose. He looks very hard to beat. The only concern would be if the inside is off.
Linda Meech with a peach of front running ride! 🍑

CHARLEISE is stepping to 2000m for the first time. She was only fair last start over 1800m. I’m not sure she has the class for this.
ONLY WORDS is racing well and can hold her rating here after her last start win at The Valley. It’s h second run at this trip and she maps to get a good run. Looks the clear second pick in the race.
“She was too good.”

GHODELEINE is racing well but has been up for a long time. She rated down last start after the Moe Cup win, but can bounce back here from a good draw. But I’m just not sure if she has another level to be a true winning chance here.
How tough is Ghodeleine!? 💪

SKYMAN has been racing consistently this prep and maps well here. He gets a good run and has good claims.
FOXY FRIDA is racing well, winning the Inglis Bracelet last start. She steps to this trip for the first time however, and is drawn to get a long way back, which is a negative. She would need a bias in her favour to really challenge here.
Quality 4yo #Foxwedge mare Foxy Frida wins the @inglis_sales Bracelet @FlemingtonVRC to take her record to four wins, five second placed efforts from 11 starts & just shy of $400k in earnings!! @anz_news @millparkstud @vicbreeders @MarkDodemaide @KPMcEvoy @ANobletRacing pic.twitter.com/Q4DODFRXp7

IN A TWINKLING, PRINCESS JENNI and ROSTROPOVICH aren’t good enough, I don’t have them in my final market.
Ballarat Cup: Final thoughts
Everything points to Thought Of That for me, I have him around a $2.50 favorite. It’s then a big gap to Only Words at $9, and the rest in double figures.
