Bendigo Cup, bendigo golden mile

We’ve got Bendigo Golden Mile Day this Saturday. It’s not like the big autumn meetings of recent weeks, but this isn’t a bad race. It’s at Listed level and is worth $200,000. It’s also a big field and there’s a lot of chances

Bendigo Golden Mile 2022: Trevor Lawson’s preview

Track There’s no rain so there’s no excuses. The track should be perfect.

Speed It should be good. It’s a big field and there’s a bit of pace. Holbein and Riodini will go forward, followed by Mandela Effect. The pace will be genuine.

Runner-by-runner

CHERRY TORTONI [$3.50] ran well last start at Flemington with blinkers first time – he hit the line well after being held up. He just needs a fair, even track to show his best.

RIODINI [$7] has struggled the last two starts in NSW but they was on very heavy tracks. He put together a couple of good runs at this distance in spring. Will go forward, likely improver.

HOLBIEN [$8] put in a good effort at Flemington last start. He’s racing well but finds it hard to win. I’m not sure he can dictate here

I AM SUPERMAN [$7.50] has been given seven weeks off and is stepping straight to the mile. His best form is at 1500m or less. I’m prepared to risk him with the top weight at the mile.

CROSSHAVEN [$11] is racing well but his best runs are at 1400m. I’m not sure he’s suited here in what looks to be a strongly-run 1600m.

ZAYYDANI [$11] resumes here. She went out winning her last two – the Matriarch and the Ballarat Cup – over they were over a bit further. She’ll settle midfield on the fence. She’ll probably be running on, but would prefer further.

HI STRANGER [$16] is racing well and has a solid record at this trip. He’s locally trained and looks a target race, third-up off a short break. Good chance for mine.

KING MAGNUS [$20] is racing okay, but he’ll get a long way back here and is only a rough chance.

ROCK [$21] got a long way out of his ground last start at Flemington when he wasn’t suited. He’s better suited here third-up at this trip. He’ll be running on strong.

LIM’S CRUISER [$26] is racing honestly but getting a bit long in the tooth. Just a rough chance.

MANDELA EFFECT [$26] was caught wide throughout last start and wasn’t suited. He’s racing okay but is another that is getting long in the tooth. Rough chance.

The rest aren’t up to this for mine, and I don’t really give them a chance: MILFORD [$17], NANCHO [$21], CORMORANT [$34], ESTI FENY [$41], MAHAMEDEIS [$51], LUNAR FOX [$51] and CAPE OF GOOD HOPE [$101].

Betting advice

I’ve got Cherry Tortoni on top but want him a bit longer, around $5.. I’ve got Riodini next, who looks a bit of value at this price for mine. Of the rest, I’ve got Rock and Hi Stranger marked around $15, so both represent some value on my prices. Should be a good race.
