Caulfield Guineas
  • Dalasan is favourite for tomorrow’s Caulfield Guineas
  • First leg: Race 7, 3:50pm local time

Dalasan is favourite in tomorrow’s Caulfield Guineas, and is at a very backable price in my opinion.

Any negatives that have been spoken about regarding the horse’s chances have been around the barrier – he’s right out in the outside gate, barrier 18.

Caulfield Guineas barrier worries?

It’s not a huge worry for me, I think that he can cross the field and sit outside the leader if he wants to.

Looking back, Bowman drew a similarly wide barrier on Press Statement (14 of 16) in this race in 2015. He crossed them straight away, led all the way, and I think he’ll do something similar here.

There’s a straight run from the start of the 1600 at Caulfield to the first turn. He can work from the outside there and continue to do so up the hill if need be, getting across into a very good spot. A quality senier rider like Bowman won’t be in two minds as to what to do – he’ll have a plan and he’ll go and execute it.

Improvement left for Dalasan

The horse has had a great prep. He won well first-up beating Scales of Justice. Second-up he got the job done again, despite running around a lot and not really settling in the run.

Last start was a disappointment for many, He didn’t push out the barriers and got a bit lost in the run, but was then strong late. He can definitely improve off that for mine.

He steps to the trip for the first time, but he was extremely strong late last start under a weaker rider.

All in all, I think he’s the best horse in the race and should be able to do a little bit more work if he has to, and still win. But may not even have to.

As I said, Bowman should go straight across the field and sit in a very nice position. Dalasan has raced on the pace before (over shorter distances) and been fine. With the stronger rider and the blinkers on, he looks a very good proposition to me.

I think the only potential negative with Dalasan is the slight chance that the blinkers fire him up too much. But at the price, I’m more than happy to be on him.

Caulfield Guineas Dangers

Alligator Blood is the only real danger for mine, and it’s yet to be seen if he’ll run the 1600 metres. Super Seth will be strong late and profiles like a mile horse. Groundswell is a very rough chance. But it’s all about the favourite in my opinion.
