Cantala Stakes 2021: Pro punter preview
Pro punter Trevor Lawson gives us his thoughts on the 2021 Cantala Stakes at Flemington.
Yet another great race on Derby Day. It’s so much easier to do the form on these races because they’re all good horses. Good horses are consistent, so you have much more confidence in what they’re going to do.
Cantala Stakes: The Speed
The speed should be on here, there’s a fair bit of it. Riodini and Buffalo River will be out hard setting it up, with Lunar Fox and Mr Brightside handy. Icebath, Cascadian and Chaillot go back.
Cantala Stakes: Key Runners
CASCADIAN ran well in the Epsom, getting home hard. He’ll get back here, but the speed should be on and he’ll be running on.
SUPERSTORM ran well last start in a fast-run Toorak. He’ll be strong late here and suited by the tempo.
RIODINI got busted last start in a fast-run Epsom. His two previous runs were solid however. Has decent claims here if he can bounce back.
BUFFALO RIVER was suited last start on a wet track, winning the Group 3 Moonga. Same thing here… the key to him is he needs a wet track.

ARAMAYO is racing really well since returning from Singapore. He put in a good effort last start in a fast-run Epsom. He’s drawn to settle back and inside here, so he’ll need to duck and dive a bit… but he’ll be strong late with clear running.
QUANTUM MECHANIC is racing consistently and ran well in the Toorak. She has rough claims here.
CHAILLOT put in a terrific effort resuming at Sandown. She’s unbeaten first-up. She’ll be strong late here, she just needs to be able to stay in touch.

MR BRIGHTSIDE has won six in a row, progressing his ratings nicely. He maps to get a good run here. He’s been up a long time however, so not sure if he has another level.

Cantala Stakes: Final thoughts
I’ve got them pretty close here, with five of them at $12 or under in my market. I’ve got Mr Brightside a narrow favourite at around $6, then Superstorm, Riodini, and Aramayo and Chaillot.
