Horse Racing Tips September 5, canterbury stakes

The Canterbury Stakes is a Group 1 race over 1,300 metres in autumn. As the name implies, the race was held at Canterbury Racecourse for much of it’s history. More recently, it was shifted to Rosehill Racecourse and most recently, to Randwick Racecourse. Total prizemoney is $500,000.

BIVOUAC is the best horse in the race, clearly. He was just okay first-up in the Lightning but generally improves second-up. The 1300m should suit a lot better than the 1000m did there. Went like a bomb last prep in the Darley, rating 121. Anything near that wins the Canterbury Stakes for sure. Clear on top.

MASKED CRUSADER had a strong win first up at 1200m here and I don’t think that’s his top. I think he can have another level in him yet. He maps well here, tracking the anticipated good pace, and the extra 100m should suit just fine. Will go well, big danger to the favourite.

SAVATIANO is a solid horse who rarely runs a bad race, and is back well again this prep with a win going 113 on resuming. My query on her is that she will likely need more than 113 to win, unless a couple of others fail to fire. I doubt she’s got more than the 113 in her. But she’ll get every chance the way the map is to again do her 113, and that does put her right in the firing line.

DREAMFORCE is resuming off 168 days. He’s an eight-year-old now, but a solid horse who won last years George Ryder rating 117 – a figure good enough to win this. Should press on and make the pace. If he is able to find that kind of form he’ll take some running down.

KEMENTARI got back to his top at the end of last prep when he won the Group 3 Scahill in Perth. His long absence from racing is well noted, but he is racing well and if some of the bigger names here fail to fire, he’s a chance.

SAMADOUBT resumes off 504 days and is a seven-year-old now. That’s the queries on him. He has trialled up very well, however. He’s tough to mark. He won the Winx Stakes first-up here at 1400m last prep, but that was August 2019. At his best he’s in it, but there has to be a doubt that he can be at his best now though.
