The CF Orr Stakes is a Group 1 weight-for-age race over 1,400 metres, held at Caulfield Racecourse in early February. The race is the first Group 1 event in Australia for the calendar year, and is worth $500,000. It attracts quality horses that are either first-up or early in their preparations as they launch their attack on major autumn races.

CF Orr Stakes 2021: Trevor Lawson’s preview

Sir Dragonet is the key to this race. Quite simply, if he’s ready to go then he wins. He obviously has the best ratings – he’s won the best WFA race in Australia, easily – but in this situation, the question is how much do you take off that figure for a first-up run. I’ve wound him right back, taking up to six lengths off him, and still have him favourite. He trialled extremely well at Geelong and won hard-held, so you’d think he’s going well. Often in this situation, the market tells the story on raceday. If he stays around the mark or even shortens, he’s probably a good thing. If he really drifts, then you’d say that’s a sign that he’s no good on the day and can’t win.

I think he’ll probably settle midfield off the fence. Crosshaven, Sovereign Award and Streets Of Avalon should go forward, and Blazejowski will box seat.

It’s a weak race outside of Sir Dragonet. Crosshaven is the three-year-old coming through, and has been reasonable fresh he was beaten first-up last prep, but then won three of four. It’s probably second pick, along with Streets Of Avalon.

Throw in the fact that they’re all resuming, and it’s one of those where you’ll simply be a lot smarter after the race!
