Coolmore Stud Stakes 2021: Pro punter preview
Pro punter Trevor Lawson gives us his thoughts on the 2021 Coolmore Stud Stakes.
Like most races on Derby Day, this is another very good one. All the top three-year-olds are here as they all want the Group 1 status for stud. No geldings here!
Coolmore Stud Stakes: The Speed
There’s speed here, as you’d expect. I think Kallos, Home Affairs and In The Congo take it up, with Sword Of State and Extreme Warrior handy. Paulele and Ranch Hand are midfield, while Artrorius will be back and needing a clear run.
Coolmore Stud Stakes: Key Runners
ARTORIUS comes back from the Guineas and a freshen-up since. He’ll be strong late but definitely needs the pace on.
IN THE CONGO is racing well this prep and had a peak figure last start over 1400m in the Golden Rose. He’s had a five-week freshen since and gets blinkers on. He’ll be up on the pace here.
In The Congo says catch me if you can in the Group 1 Golden Rose!

HOME AFFAIRS put in a terrific effort in winning first-up in the Listed Heritage Stakes, then was not suited in The Everest. He’s drawn out here, which looks preferable, and sits on the pace. He’s a good chance here.
PAULELE ran terrifically first-up in the Listed Rosebud, then rated down over the next two before bouncing back last start to win the Group 2 Roman Consul. He can hold his figure here.
Far too good as Paulele captures 3rd stakes victory in the Group 2 Polytrack Roman Consul S. at @royalrandwick – 5 from 9 & over $600k. Bred & raced by @godolphin, Paulele is by Dawn Approach & is a ½ brother to 2 SWs in Tessera and Montsegur (dam of GW Heresy). pic.twitter.com/5CnI4ONTYp

KALLOS ran a very fast time over in winning over 1100 metres in the Group 2 Danehill. He’s drawn out and another that will sit right on the speed. He’s a good chance.
Big moment for Fred Kersley!

RANCH HAND put in a terrific effort in a first-up win down the straight in the Listed Poseidon. He wasn’t suited last start in the Danehill, having to go wide. He’s drawn out wide here which actually looks a positive. He has a good chance at odds if he can bounce back to his first-up figure.
EXTREME WARRIOR was an impressive maiden winner at Echuca, then exploded last start in winning the Group 3 Blue Sapphire. He’s the horse to beat if he can hold his rating.

Coolmore Stud Stakes: Final thoughts
This should be a good, tight race, there’s so much quality here. I’ve got Extreme Warrior on top after his fantastic performance in the Blue Sapphire, at around $6. I’ve then got In the Congo and Home Affairs just behind him, and then Artorius and Kallos on the third line. Looking forward to a great contest.
