Cox Plate 2021: Pro punter preview

Pro punter Trevor Lawson gives us his thoughts on the 2021 Cox Plate

We’ll look out for the track pattern but a lot depends what happens the night before. We’ve seen the inside on or off at this meeting depending on the Friday night… will we get some rain and the inside might chop up?

In any case, the leader will basically head to where they need to be and the rest will follow.

Cox Plate: The Speed

The only pace on paper is from Callsign Mav. Really not sure who sits second. I assume Captivant sits handy, and Dalasan and Mo’unga can also settle handy. Anamoe goes back.

Cox Plate: Runner-by-runner

ZAAKI SCRATCHED was disappointing last start, but it was his first run in Australia on a good track. So it might’ve been a bit firmer than he prefers. He gets to dictate the race here and based on what we’re seeing, probably gets softer ground. I don’t think he’ll return a massive career-best figure, but I think can return to what he did two starts back… and that would be good enough to win.

DALASAN is fourth-up here at 2040 metres. His previous two starts have produced a good figure and I reckon he can run a race here at odds.

GOLD TRIP SCRATCHED is a former overseas galloper having his first start for Maher and is under a bit of an injury cloud. He has an impressive Timeform rating and if he’s fit and healthy, has a good chance here. And his chances would be enhanced by a soft track.

CALLSIGN MAV has won his past two Group 1s in New Zealand, but they look lesser class than this. Entitled to be the outsider.

MO’UNGA is racing well and his last two runs have been solid. Bowman goes on here and I think he can run to a new peak.

VERRY ELLEEGANT was disappointing in the Turnbull when she settled handy. She’ll possibly be ridden a bit colder here. She prefers the wet ground so would be happy if we get the rain. She looks to be well found in the market though, for mine.

PROBABEEL is racing well and doing it very consistently, but she just just lacks the killer punch for this class in my opinion..

STATE OF REST won nicely last start, but is hard to get a line on. His Timeform rating isn’t that high. He looks to map to get back, so he might find some of these too quick.

ANAMOE had a terrific win in the Guineas off a really fast pace. He probably goes back to last here from the outside barrier. He really needs the speed on, and for others to hit the brick wall.

CAPTIVANT was narrowly beaten by Anamoe in the Guineas, and can settle a lot handier than it here. Rough claims.

Cox Plate: Final thoughts

Obviously the scratching of the favourite has thrown things around a lot. I now have Anamoe clear favourite at around $3.30, from Verry Elleegant, with the rest of the small field at $12+.
