Cranbourne Cup 2021: Pro punter preview

Pro punter Trevor Lawson gives us his thoughts on the 2021 Cranbourne Cup.

Cranbourne Cup: The track

There’s a bit of the unknown in the lead-up regarding the rain. It appears we’ll get quite a bit between now (writing this on Thursday) and race time, but forecasts are, of course, always being revised. They’ve given it out as a Soft 6 early, but it’s probably a bit better than that. We’ll see how it comes up on Saturday.

Cranbourne Cup: The speed

The speed here is pretty solid. Buffalo River will probably lead from Imperial Lad. No Effort will push forward, and then Holbein and Age Of Chivalry will sit handy.

Cranbourne Cup: Runner by runner

BUFFALO RIVER is an on-pacer and will take it up here. His chances are enhanced by a genuine wet track.

SO SI BON is struggling this prep and I’m not sure he wants it too wet. I’d prefer to wait until he actually shows something before thinking about backing him.

AGE OF CHIVALRY is on the quick back-up from winning the Chatham at Flemington. He ran fourth in the Cantala last year off a quick back-up, so has done it before. He maps to get a good run here. The only slight query is on the genuinely wet ground.

LUNAR FOX is racing honestly this prep, but wouldn’t be more than a slim chance in this company. He’s a query on genuinely wet ground too.

JUSTACANTA is looking to back up for the second week in row, after winning the Linlithgow and running third in the Chatham. He’s racing well. The biggest query is that he only has one run over this trip, and it was four years ago. Rough chance.

IN A TWINKLING is a former New Zealander that resumes here for a new trainer. He’s trialed okay, but his best form is over further than this. The market will be the best guide here.

NO EFFORT is an honest mare who loves wet ground. She’s coming off a short let-up. The wide draw is a slight concern, but she has a rough chance.

KING MAGNUS is racing well and ran well in the Cantala last start. I’m not sure if he he wants it really wet thought, and he does get a negative jockey change here.

OUR PLAYBOY is on the quick back-up from a solid effort last week, winning at Flemington. He handles the wet ground. He’s drawn to get back here’s but will be strong late as long as the pattern on the day isn’t against him.

RIDDLE ME THAT is racing fairly. This trip is as far as he wants. Probably needs no worse than a Soft 5 to show his best form.

DON’T DOUBT DORY won well last start in the Peninsula Cup at Mornington. This trip suits and a wet track should be okay. The only question mark is whether Barrier 1 will still be suited late in the day.

HOLBIEN is struggling this prep but gets significant gear changes here. I’m happy to risk him on a wet track.

ARCADIA PRINCE is not good enough.

IMPERIAL LAD is racing honestly. He handles a wet track and will be up on the pace here. He has claims.

MYSTERY SHOT returned to somewhere near his better form last start at Flemington. He comes back in trip here but shouldn’t be a huge problem. He’s a good chance on a wet track… if he makes the field!

BARBIE’S FOX is racing okay and is back in class here, which suits. She needs a really wet track to show herbest.

Cranbourne Cup: Final thoughts

We’re really waiting on the weather to see if this is an attractive betting proposition, or just a real slog. I’ve got Our Playboy on top from Buffalo River. Tread carefully, and while some rain is okay, let’s hope we don’t get too much!
