Doncaster Mile Preview

The Doncaster is often a battle between a star carrying weight and some up-and-comers with a feather on their back and the 2011 edition looks no different. More Joyous is a star. I have no doubt that she deserves to be a clear favourite here, but how short is short enough? Hard to knock a horse that has won 12 of her last 13 starts but the $2.50 is too short for me to be interested. Her form this campaign has been great but at no stage has she really been tested and she certainly will here. Nash Rawiller will let her jump and run from barrier eight and while she will figure in the finish she doesn’t represent good value at her current quote. Love Conquers All was fantastic in the George Ryder when used up early but fought on very well to be narrowly beaten by Rangirangdoo. The question mark over him is whether he will be able to run a strong mile on the pace. He does meet More Joyous 6.5kg better from the last time they met when she beat him by 2.8 lengths in the 1300m Canterbury Stakes. Captain Sonador won the Epsom here in the Spring and on that occasion he was coming off a 2.6 length third in a Group 3. He drops 5.5kg here from his last start in the George Ryder where he came from 11th on the turn to finish 2.9 lengths off them. He is going as good if not better right now than he was in the Spring and is wonderfully weighted for a Group 1 winner here over a mile. Aloha surprised me with her effort last start. It was a big step up from the Coolmore with 1kg over the limit to Weight For Age against the boys. Her effort to work home the way she did was very encouraging and like the others she gets in very well here back to a handicap. Group 1 Glen Boss will get her in and put her to sleep and she will no doubt present when asked to go.
Triple Elegance finished side by side with Aloha in the George Ryder and meets her 2kg better here. He has drawn a perfect gate and Waller has had this race in his sights for this guy all campaign. He improved lengths when they put the blinkers on him and that put him into a different league. I can just see him getting the run of the race here while a few others will get back and need some luck in running. Early selections:

  1. Triple Elegance
  2. Captain Sonador
  3. More Joyous
