Easter Cup 2022: Trevor Lawson’s preview
This is a pretty good quality race. It’s a huge field, which they’ll be happy. Unfortauntely that means there are a lot of chances! Let’s take a look at them.
Track The rail comes out to 3m from last Saturday. It shouldn’t make too much difference to how it plays.
Speed The speed will come from Holbein on the inside and Spirit Ridge, Sacramanto and Grand Slam from out wide. It’ll be genuinely run.

PONDUS [$3.90] put in a terrific effort at Flemington over this trip two starts back, then was good again last start. Maps to get a good run. Good chance.
GRANDSLAM [$8] has been heavily supported both runs this trip without success, but has had excuses. He’s third-up here which was his peak last prep. Can improve big time here.
ROUSSEAU [$8] produced a peak figure last start when allowed to dictate in front, but it looks like a different set-up here. Prefer others.
SPIRIT RIDGE [$11] is an on-pacer who hasn’t been suited by either run this prep on a heavy track. He’s back on a dry track here which should enhance his chances. He’s a chance at double-figure odds.
MILFORD [$12] is racing well and also has some chance at double-figure odds.
SECRET BLAZE [$14] put in a good effort last start. He comes here fourth-up and should be ready to go to a new best.
KING MAGNUS [$15] is racing only fairly since having a short break. He’s stepping out in trip, which looks a negative. I’m happy to go around him.

DEFIBRILLATE [$16] has a good record at this track and trip. He gets blinkers for the first time here. Arguably can run to his best.
HOLBIEN [$16] is an on-pacer who’s been going okay lately, but I would prefer him. back in trip.
ESTI FENY [$18] drew wide and made some ground first-up off a very long spell. Only a rough chance here for mine.
ROCK [$19] is fourth-up here and quickly to 2000m. I would prefer to have see him have another lead-up run. Rough chance.
PANCHO [$19] is racing honestly and can roll forward here from the barrier. Not the worst chance at the price.
SACRAMENTO [$26] won the Canberra Cup two starts back before pulling up with a throat issue last start in the Mornington Cup. He’ll roll forward here. He a good chance if he can return to the Canberra Cup form.
OUR INTRIGUE [$41] wasn’t suited first-up but jumps in trip here and has a good record at this distance. The wide barrier is a concern but she’s not the worst at huge odds.
I’ve got it pretty open with plenty of chances…
- Pondus is on top for mine but I have it around $6, so wouldn’t be touching it at this price.
- Like the market I have Grandslam second and I could I could back him at this price, but no shorter.
- After that I have Defibrillate and Pancho, and both of them are also backable prices. So I’ll be looking to get on those two at good odds.
