George Main Stakes

The George Main Stakes is a Group 1 weight-for-age race over 1600 metres, run at Randwick Racecourse during the Spring Carnival. The race is named after George Main, who was a former chairman of the Australian Jockey Club, one of the forerunners to the Australian Turf Club.

The race has been around since 1945 and has some superstars of the turf on its honour roll – big winners include horses such as Kingston Town, Vo Rogue, Shaftsbury Avenue, Lohnro and More Joyous. More recently, the race has been dominated by champion mare Winx. The George Main was a regular step in Winx’s spring campaigns, and she won the race three years in a row between 2016 and 2018.

The race had held Principal Race or Group 1 status since its 1945 inception, and has always been run over 1,600 or a mile. Its place on the calendar means it often attracts horses aimed at major races later in the Spring Carnival, as thus often boasts a high-quality field. The winner of the race gains a guaranteed start in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap.

THINK IT OVER closed it out strongly to win the Chelmsford rating 115, and that makes him a very strong chance here too. Likely be with or tracking VERRY ELLEEGANT in the run and the prospect of even tempo up front suits him. Should get his chance here again and very hard to beat.

VERRY ELLEEGANT is a top class-mare who was good resuming here over the 1400m. Up to the mile is very suited, however she is at her absolute best when it is a bit softer than this. That being said she has JMac on and gets a great run in the race. She’ll get her chance and is obviously very hard to beat.

CASCADIAN loves the Randwick mile, won the Doncaster here in the autumn and showed, with a very strong closing run resuming in the Winx Stakes, that he is back in form this prep. Not completely suited if it favours on-pacers but by this time of the day that might start to even out a bit… and in this smaller field he won’t be giving them a big start. Over the odds for me.

RIODINI put in a very tough effort last start, leading to the last centimetres of the Chelmsford Stakes with margins to third. He gets his own lead here and that will be an advantage for him. If he holds that form he’ll take a lot of running down for mine. Over the odds.

KOLDING is back to defend his crown from last year. He has come back okay this prep but through different races. His 111 from last year would probably not quite be enough this year. That being said, he improved on those marks in the autumn. Maps well here.

HUNGRY HEART was the winner of the Phar Lap, the Vinery Stud Stakes and the Australian Oaks in the autumn. The now-mare has a ton of ability and I don’t think we’ve seen her top yet. That being said, we are more likely to see her top over a little further. She should be closing it out well though.

STAR OF THE SEAS showed improved effort last start, and ran well over the mile at Flemington in the Autumn winning the Blamey. Can get up towards that mark here and does like the Randwick mile.
