SA Winners analyst Nadia Horne brings you her Group 1 Goodwood Handicap preview ahead of Saturday’s meeting at Morphettville.
Group 1 Goodwood Handicap (1200m)
Race should be run at above average tempo. Valour Road and Inn Keeper should go forward with Jamaican Rain, Casino Wizard, Cool Passion all handy. The 1200m start at Morphettvile is a long run to the only bend and those drawn wide have ample time to get across. Those drawn inside have to kick up to hold their position as pressure tends to come from out wide.
#1 Booker (Ellerton & Zahra / Dwayne Dunn)
Barrier 15, 56.5kg
Ten weeks between runs. Won the Oakleigh Plate when fresh, recording last 600m +7.9L above class average off +4.4L lead speed, running to a new career peak. Prefer drawn wider at this start. Market price is acceptable. Has ran to the required number to win.
#2 Spright (Garry Frazer / Damien Oliver)
Barrier 16, 56.5kg
Gets back and this appears to have genuine speed. Too good at G1 level this track and trip last start, running closing splits +6.1L above class average. Prices up as favourite with the best recent performance figure. Needs to run off this number for the others to beat her home.
#3 Despatch (Tony McEvoy / Todd Pannell)
Barrier 4, 56kg
Won all three runs this time in, this clearly the toughest test. Needs to improve further to win.
#4 Hard Empire (Richard & Chantelle Jolly / Jake Toeroek)
Barrier 3, 56kg
Ran to a very high figure first-up, a new career peak, and rated well off that 5/4. Difficult to have.
#5 Casino Wizard (Lee Creek / Jason Holder)
Barrier 6, 55.5kg
Three runs this campaign have been off career peak. Needs to run to that and then some to win this.
#6 Steel Frost (Will Clarken / Jamie Kah)
Barrier 8, 55.5kg
Rating well off best figures this time in but was good through the line in the Wangoom. Market price is correct.
#7 Valour Road (Simon A Miller / Luke Currie)
Barrier 9, 55.5kg
Ran to a strong figure when led off a moderate -5.3L lead tempo, and was above par through the closing sections. There appears to be more pressure here.
#8 Cool Passion (Tony McEvoy / Barend Vorster)
Barrier 2, 54.5kg
Led them up in the TAB Classic and fought on well, and it does appear to be the stronger form line. Can she turn the tables on Spright seeing she came from behind and ran her down? Still a leading contender.
#9 Malibu Style (Neville Parnham / Chris Parnham)
Barrier 10, 54.5kg
Carried weight in the Wangoom and ran to one of his better performance figures. Needs to lift to hit a winning rating but is over the odds at the current price.
#10 Iconoclasm (Danny O’Brien / Craig Williams)
Barrier 12, 54.5kg
Won well first-up and did record a high rating last time in that measures up to the likes of Spright. Needs to find a couple of lengths on first-up win to hit it.
#11 I Am Someone (Paul Preusker / Dean Holland)
Barrier 7, 54.5kg
Got through on the inside off a hot +8.5L lead tempo in the Wangoom, running last 600m +5.3L. Settles off speed. I have priced around market quote.
#12 Inn Keeper (Symon Wilde / Damien Thornton)
Barrier 5, 54.5kg
Big run first-up and rated off that number in the Wangoom when well supported by the market. Ran to a very high figure last campaign at Caulfield over 1100m, prefer with a bit of cut in the track.
#13 Zalmona (Peter Blanch / Paul Gatt)
Barrier 14, 54.5kg
Keeps running up to performance figures the market isn’t giving him credit for. Should there be so much price discrepancy between he and Despatch seeing there has been small margin differences in their last two encounters?
#14 Jamaican Rain (Richard Laming / Tegan Harrison)
Barrier 11, 54kg
Missed a run a fortnight ago and comes off a low rating run in Sydney when had issues last start. Best form lines up and has been priced in early markets off her peak performances.
#15 Gytrash (Gordon Richards / Dom Tourneur)
Barrier 13, 53kg
Hit a new level this campaign and will have to improve further to win this.
#16 Behemoth (David Jolly / Anthony Darmanin)
Barrier 1, 53kg
X-factor horse in the race. Shouldn’t be here on handicap rating but he is a talent. The massive negative is drawing gate 1 and on that basis I’m happy to risk him, but there may be a good race win in him down the track.
Sticking with SPRIGHT (2) as the likely winner, broke through for that elusive Group 1 in the TAB Classic, recording a new career peak figure. She would have to rate down off that of other improve for her to be beaten. BOOKER (1) is off a freshen and recorded her career best win winning the Oakleigh Plate two starts ago. I AM SOMEONE (11) comes through Warrnambool and gets a good run. VALOUR ROAD (7) and COOL PASSION (8) next best.
