Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes

SA racing analyst Nadia Horne brings you her Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes preview ahead of Saturday’s meeting at Morphettville.

Speed

Appears to be a moderately-run Group 1 Sprint with Jamaican Rain (6) likely to lead Mamzelle Tess (9) and Lady Cosmology (15) from out wider. Cool Passion (2) and Thrillster (14) get the gun runs.

The Field

#1 Spright (Garry Frazer / Damien Oliver), Barrier 15

Got too far back in Sydney following high rating performances. This looks to be a slowly-run Group 1 race and she will get back. Has genuine claims but I can’t get as short as the market under this race shape.

#2 Cool Passion (Tony McEvoy / Barend Vorster), Barrier 4

Recent Gawler trial winner over stablemate Sunlight and is 56 days between runs. Goes well off a break and genuine Group performer. Does measure up and gets a gun run.

#3 Princess Of Queens (Mick Price / Jamie Kah), Barrier 2

Off a freshen following an equal career peak performance Caulfield 9/2 when ridden perfectly. Needs to find a length or two.

#4 Ellicazoom (Hayes & Dabernig / Ben Allen), Barrier 6

Has run to a rating (back on 1/9/18) that measures up at this level, but well off that level in recent runs. Too far back in Sydney and blood found in a nostril (trauma) 22/3. Rough place chance.

#5 I’ll Have A Bit (John McArdle / Ben Thompson), Barrier 3

Got too far back off a slow -6.5L lead speed 13/4, prefer off a strong tempo. Best form measures up, but way off that this campaign.

#6 Jamaican Rain (Richard Laming / Craig Williams), Barrier 5

Best performances with a bit of give in the ground but could end up leading. Rated highly off a slow -7.2L lead speed first-up when a winner of the Mannerism, and pulled up sore in the Coolmore when well in the market. Can improve.

#7 Divine Quality (Robbie Griffiths / Beau Mertens), Barrier 13

Strong performance first-up at Flemington and comes through stronger races last two. Some chance on best form but will get back.

#8 Bella Martini (Team Hawkes / Dwayne Dunn), Barrier 1

Blinkers go on but needs to improve.

#9 Mamzelle Tess (Leon & Troy Corstens / Jason Maskiell), Barrier 8

Consistent mare racing in career peak form. Maps well and market price justified.

#10 Everyday Lady (Will Clarken / Michael Walker), Barrier 10

Improved mare for new stable but this is a totally different ball game.

#11 Grey Shadow (Maher & Eustace / John Allen), Barrier 12

Career peak performance first-up, but will she back up frm Warrnambool this week when disappointing.

#12 Mica Lil (Mark Minervini / Dom Tourneur), Barrier 7

Placed in this race last year but failed to recapture that form. Happy to risk.

#13 Anjana (Mick Price / Michael Dee), Barrier 9

Racing consistently but rated off career peak when well in the market here last start. Chance on peak ratings and can settle handy.

#14 Thrillster (Leon & Troy Corstens / Stephen Baster), Barrier 11

Huge chance. 3YO who was competitive at Group level in the Spring. Returned Caulfield 20/4 and not far off career peak. Genuine winning chance.

#15 Lady Cosmology (Simon A Miller / Luke Currie), Barrier 14

Fitter for two runs and a beaten odds-on fav 19/4 in Perth over 1400m. Settles on speed and back in trip. Shows potential but needs to record a new career peak to win… but has upside.

Verdict

Predicted finish: 14, 2, 1, 6

Thrillster (14) gets a great run off speed and rated just off career peak first-up. Expect her to take improvement out the run and comes up on top. Cool Passion (2) also get a good run on pace and is off a freshen, expect to rate close to career peak. Then out to Spright (1) and Jamaican Rain (6). I have this a wide market.
