Kingsford-Smith Cup: Alfie’s preview
Speed Fast – the pace will be on here. Apache Chase and Rothfire to lead with Ellsberg and Scallopini the second pair back. Paulele should be midfield in the running line. Entriviere might settle six lengths off speed.
Track It’s hard to say a couple of days out what the track will be. We know Eagle Farm handles the wet, but got down to a Heavy 8 last time we raced here. There’s no rain forecast on Saturday, but there is on Thursday / Friday. I’m assuming a track in the 5-6 range. The last race day at Eagle Farm was the 14th May, and winners came from both back and forward depending on tempo. Off the fence was best over the last 400 metres.

12 Entriviere [$4.60] put in a great run last start in the Doomben 10,000, and if she can improve off that mark she’ll be in this a long way. She’ll settle back, so always needs some luck from somewhere.
14 Isotope [$13] got too far back in the 10,000 and was no chance from there. She’s drawn awkwardly again but should settle midfield. Not sure about the wet, but she’s certainly a talented mare.
4 Eleven Eleven [$13] is up in grade from his last start at Scone, but is putting some nice ratings together. I’m just not sure if he’s up to the level of the top two.
5 Apache Chase [$13] ran second in The Archer at Rockhampton first-up. He’ll be fitter second-up, I just think he might be better on a dry track. But he’ll take some running down.
3 Ellsberg [$13] will be sitting in behind the leaders. He hasn’t put a big number up at Group 1 WFA level yet, so will need to improve.
11 September Run [$16] has a rating in the dry that could win this at 1200m, but I question if she’s up to the 1300m in this field.
“Just the track the other day, she couldn’t go early. It would be nice to be midfield. Just a little bit of jar out of the track is perfect for her.”

16 Brooklyn Hustle [$18] will be back and maybe inside, so will need luck. But she’ll be flashing late from somewhere.
15 Away Game [$18]… the $4 million broodmare! She’s a very tough horse, and will run a good race as she usually does. Place chance.
7 Rothfire [$18] is tough to start tipping again before we’re sure that the old Rothfire is really back. I’ll be happy if he proves me wrong and wins.
1 Private Eye [$19] wants longer than this.
2 Laws Of Indices [$21] will handle the wet, but hasn’t been great at his last two starts.
9 Signore Fox [$21] will be back and will have a lot of work to do.
17 Scallopini [$31] was good running second in the Group 2 Victory Stakes. An emergency here.
Verdict & betting strategy
This is a great race. I think the top two in the market are the standouts.
After that there’s about ten runners that could sneak in, so it’s also a tough race!
Bet I’m backing Entriviere, he’s on top for me and the deserved favourite.
Saver bet I’ll be having something on Paulele: he’s the obvious danger and I won’t be losing if he wins it.
