Lightning Stakes 2021: Trevor Lawson’s Preview

In terms of speed, Nature Strip will lead from Pippie. Fabergino will be handy and Bivouac just behind them. September Run and Swats That will get back.

Bivouac is resuming but should be wound up – he’s a stallion and it’s a Group 1 WFA race, after all. His last two runs down the straight have been wins in the Newmarket and the VRC Sprint Classic. He gets the right run here and simply ticks all the boxes. Clearly the horse to beat… I’ll be backing him.

Nature Strip didn’t win a race last prep – he led down the straight in the VRC Sprint Classic, but was easily overtaken by Bivouac. I’m not sure he’s going as well as what he was at his best. His last two wins were on wet tracks in Sydney. He’s at his best when he gets to bowl along on his own, but I don’t think that’ll happen here.

Elite Street has won six in a row – from a maiden to a Group 1. I’ve rated him right up to his Winterbottom figure and I’ve still got him a long way off Bivouac.

Halvorsen resumed off an 11 month break and was well beaten. Has run well down the straight in the past, but I’ve rated him to his absolute best and got him longer than 100/1 in this field.

Pippie is a terrific fresh horse and is unbeaten first-up. Last prep she won the G1 Moir first-up. She’s only had one run down the straight, running second to Tofane. Should run to her best here, but that still doesn’t get her near the top hopes.

Fabergino has won her past two. She was racing well this time last year, then didn’t really come up early in the spring. Ran third in the VRC Sprint Classic behind Bivouac and Nature Strip, but eight lengths back.

September Run has had three runs down the straight and improved every time. Won the Coolmore in the spring, but this is harder against all the older horses.

Swats That was easily beaten by September Run last start… hard to see the tables being turned here.
