magic millions 3yo classic

We’ve got our first big-money races of the year on Saturday at the Gold Coast Magic Millions meeting, where the $2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas is one of the features.

Boasting $10 million in prizemoney across the raceday, the Magic Millions Gold Coast race meeting has become an early-year highlight on the racing calendar. The races are only open to graduates of Magic Millions sales, and therefore carry ‘Restricted Listed’ status.

The Magic Millions 3YO Guineas is run over 1400 metres and was first held in 2001. It’s one of the feature races on the day, along with the Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

Read on for a full preview of the race from our Queensland racing gun, The Professor.

Magic Millions 3YO Guineas: The Professor’s preview

There’s plenty of pace in the race and I’m expecting those coming from off the speed to be suited by both race shape and track bias.

1 Bend The Knee Fairly plain last start in the Gosford Guineas when beaten 4.5 lengths into fifth. Needs to improve considerably on that.

2 Jamaea Obviously has enough ability to win this, but missed her lead-up run in the Nudgee Stakes and now comes into this first-up off of a 112 day break. Doesn’t seem like an ideal set-up.

3 King Of Sparta Wasn’t far away in Gosford Guineas first-up. Gets Nash on board and should be suited by the tempo and track pattern. Looks a real chance.

4 Release The Beans Was good first-up in the Gold Edition and then disappointing second-up in the Vo Rogue. The heavy track may have played its part there and it could improve here with Prebble on, but will need a new peak to win

5 Far Too Easy He’d been electric in winning his first two this campaign before a flat performance last time in the Gold Edition. I’m not wild about that race as a lead-in to this, and he’s up to 1400m for the first time.

6 Starman Couldn’t have been more impressive in a soft win here over 1200m last start. This is a big jump in grade but he maps nicely and is on the quick back-up. Genuine chance.

7 Construct He’s been okay in two runs back this prep, but nothing in that form suggests he’s a genuine winning chance here.

8 I Am Lethal Won well enough in a BM72 at Kensington last time out, but he’ll need to improve significantly on that run to win here I think. Gets Hugh on board, but looks unders to me at current quote.

9 Rhapsody Rose Was impressive in winning two on the bounce this prep, but was not competitive last time out and is now having her sixth start of the campaign. She’ll have to work if she wants to go forward. Just doesn’t look a good set up for her.

10 Miss Hipstar Hasn’t been able to reach the same heights in her three-year-old season as she did in her two-year-old season. Looks out of her grade here.

11 Me Me Lagarde Has won 3 from 4 including her last start in the Gold Edition. That was a good enough run but I really don’t like that race as a lead in to today.

12 Glorious Ruby Will struggle to be competitive.

13 Shihonka We can probably ignore the run in the Vo Rogue on the Heavy 1,0 but I’m not a fan of the prior win at Rosehill either. Looks unders to me at the current mark.

14 Indiscreetly Has won 3 from 3 and I don’t think we’ve gotten to the bottom of her yet. Has had everything in her favour in all 3 starts and won’t get that here, but I don’t think you can dismiss her.

15 Mishani Enchanted Scratched

16 Ruby Kisses Unlikely to be competitive.

17 Dovetail Diva We can ignore the last start on the Heavy 10. Her prior win had merit but I don’t think she’ll be suited by tempo and would need absolutely everything in her favour.

18 Socialist Can take a line through I Am Lethal. I’m not keen on it’s chances so it’s very hard to like Socialist.

19 Snitzonfire More I Am Lethal form here. More unders.

20 Alert And Ready Struggles to be competitive away from Toowoomba. Can’t win.

21 Mishani Scandal Hasn’t really threatened to win much easier races than this in four runs this prep. Write your own ticket.

22 Suttos Gal Her win three runs back was good, but is ninth-up now and her last two have been non-competitive. Pass.

23 Our Hot Friend Will win a BM65 soon… but won’t be winning this.

Magic Millions 3YO Guineas: The Professor’s betting approach

As the market suggests this is an open race, though one with a pretty long tail. Of those in the market I think both I Am Lethal and Jamaea are unders – though the former moreso than the latter. I’d much prefer to be with King Of Sparta or Starman at the current odds.
