Manikato Stakes 2021: Pro punter preview
Pro punter Trevor Lawson gives us his thoughts on the 2021 Manikato Stakes
It’s a big wait-and-see on the weather for the Friday night meeting. They’re saying it might start raining mid to late afternoon, so a lot depends how much rain we get. A little bit won’t matter too much. But if we get a fair bit then this race, being at the back end of the card, wilI be impacted. I haven’t factored anything in on it yet as it’s always dangerous to rely on forecasts. We’ll see what comes, hopefully there’s not too much.
Manikato Stakes: The Speed
The speed is pretty good here, actually. Jonker should lead from Lombardo, Crystal Bound and Savtoxl. Swats That will be forward too from out wider.
Manikato Stakes: Runner-by-runner
STREETS OF AVALON resumes off a freshen-up and has run well here in the past. Has rough claims.
JONKER has a couple of decent ratings in Queensland from last prep. This prep he was well held when beaten down the straight at Flemington, and then well beaten at Randwick. He looks to be struggling this prep.
SAVATOXL ran well first-up when resuming. He won nicely second-up last prep. He can improve here second-up.
EXPRESS PASS maps to settle back and wide here. I think he’ll struggle to run down the leaders.
LOMBARDO is racing well over his past three starts and maps nicely here. He has solid claims.
“We were keen to go back to The Valley, it’s worked out really well and he’s drawn really well, he’s just gone from strength to strength”

AWAY GAME was poor last start. The previous run was okay, but I think she might just struggle to match this lot.
BELLA NIPOTINA has racing well since change of trainer. She maps to sit handy on the inside here and will run well.
SWATS THAT was caught wide on the speed when resuming over the 1000m. She goes to 1200m here, but is drawn wide again. I’d prefer her in something easier than this.
LA MEXICANA is racing well in lesser grades but it’s hard to see her figuring in a Group 1.
INGRATIATING put in a good effort in his first two runs back, then was disappointing last start when the blinkers went on. The blinkers come back off here, I think he can run well.
SNEAKY FIVE was suited by the bias last start. This is a different set-up. It’s hard to see her winning.
CRYSTAL BOUND has had two runs back from the spell and had the bias against her both times. She maps to settle handy here and has good claims.
Manikato Stakes: Final thoughts
I’ve got Savatoxl favourite but I have the field $5+, so it’s certainly wide open. Lombardo and Ingratiating are on the second line, then Bella Nipotina from Crystal Bound.
