melbourne cup 2020

Time flies! The Spring Racing Carnival is on our doorstep, and Melbourne Cup 2020 is actually not far away…

This year presents a very interesting puzzle for punters. We’re in unprecedented times due to COVID-19, which will have a big impact on the international horses travelling to Australia for Melbourne Cup 2020.

It’s been a very long time since we’ve seen a Melbourne Cup made up mostly of Aussie and Kiwi horses. Will that be the case in 2020 or will we still see an influx of international raiders trying to take out or great race? On this page you’ll be able to stay up to date with all the horses set for Melbourne Cup 2020.

Odds displayed are from Australia’s favourite bookmaker, TopSport (odds updated 24th September).

Melbourne Cup 2020: The Contenders

Surprise Baby: currently $8 with TopSport

Won the Group 3 Bart Cummings in the lead-up to the 2019 Melbourne Cup, before running a very credible fifth placing in the great race. Genuine stayer who can improve on that in 2020. Ran a solid second on return in the Feehan Stakes at Moonee Valley.

Russian Camelot: currently $8.50 with TopSport

Victorian trainer Danny O’Brien is looking to go back-to-back after last year’s triumph of Vow And Declare, and he might just have the horse to do it. A superb win in the South Australian Derby catapulted Russian Camelot to the upper reaches of the Melbourne Cup 2020 market. Returned with a huge run to finish second in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes.

Tiger Moth: currently $11 with TopSport

Lightly-raced Irish stayer from Aidan O’Brien who has been given a big weight penalty for the Cup after a four-length win in the Group 3 Kilternan Stakes over 2400 metres.

Santiago: currently $15 with TopSport

Another O’Brien runner. Ran fourth in the Group 1 St Leger at Doncaster.

Ashrun: currently $16 with TopSport

High-quality European stayer who will spearhead Australian Bloodstock’s attempts to win the Cup. Prepared by German trainer Andreas Wohler, the man behind the successful tilt at the 2014 Cup with Protectionist.

Verry Elleegant: currently $18 with TopSport

Star Waller mare who’ll have a high-profile spring campaign. Won the Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) at Rosehill in Autumn, and returned for the Spring with a tough win in the Group 1 Winx Stakes. Ran fourth as favourite in the Group 1 George Main Stakes.

Finche: currently $21 with TopSport

Waller runner that produced a great effort in last year’s Cup to finish seventh. Returned with a hard-running third in the Group 2 Chelmsford at Randwick.

Master Of Wine: currently $21 with TopSport

The Hawkes-trained gelding had a great Autumn campaign, which culminated in fourth place in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick. The Caulfield Cup looks an ideal target, followed by a tilt at the big one. Returned for the Spring in the Group 1 Winx Stakes.

King Of Leogrance: currently $26 with TopSport

Another Danny O’Brien-trained stayer. Enjoyed a super autumn, winning over 2600m at Flemington before taking out the Adelaide Cup in stunning fashion. Topped it off with second in the Andrew Ramsden over 2800m at Flemington in May.

Le Don De Vie: currently $26 with TopSport

British stayer trained by Hughie Morrison. Scored a comfortable win in the Listed August Stakes and now on the way to Melbourne.

Master Of Reality: currently $26 with TopSport

One of Joseph O’Brien’s hopes, Master Of Reality ran fourth in last year’s Cup. Well and truly put himself in this year’s picture with a 3.5 length win in the Listed Her Majesty’s Plate at Down Royal.

Nickajack Cave: currently $26 with TopSport

Irish stayer purchased by a group of Australian owners, and will be sent to Peter Moody to aim at the Cup. Recently won the Group 3 Ballyroan Stakes (2414m) in Ireland.

Sir Dragonet: currently $26 with TopSport

Highly-rated European stayer being sent to Ciaron Maher and David Eustace for the spring. Recently ran second in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup in Ireland.
