Might And Power Stakes 2021: Pro punter preview
Pro punter Trevor Lawson gives us his thoughts on the 2021 Might And Power Stakes. This is the first running of the race under the name that honours the champion Might And Power Stakes – the race was previously simply called the Caulfield Stakes.
This isn’t the first time this race has presented as a cakewalk for a star in a small field – recall Winx in 2016.
There’s actually a bit of speed here. No Effort will probably lead and Homesman should show some speed. Zaaki will probably just take a trail and sit third or thereabouts.
HOMESMAN ran okay first-up in the JRA Cup. He did run second to Zaaki in June, beaten 1.5 lengths, but Zaaki had him covered pretty comfortably. It’s hard to see him turning the tables on that here.
ZAAKI been good in both runs this prep and improved his rating last start. He still looks to be on the up. He’s obviously got a mortgage on this race, he doesn’t have to improve at all from last start to win it easily. Any improvement he does show – which looks likely – just adds to that.
NONCONFORMIST is racing well.. but this is a different class.
NICKAJACK CAVE has had one run in Australia and was beaten six lengths. I highly doubt he can figure here.

PROBABEEL is racing honestly and is certainly entitled to be second pick here. But Zaaki beat her by two lengths the other day, and still looks to be on the up. It’s very hard to see her turning the tables here.
NO EFFORT is outclassed here. They’re probably just trying to get a Group 1 placing in the small field.
So you’re getting around $1.20 for Zaaki here, which is probably a fair price or even a touch of overs. Personally it’s not my style to jump in at those sort of odds, so I’ll just be watching and enjoying. I’m sure many will use it to add some value to their multis. Good luck… though I doubt you’ll need it with this horse!
