Open Handicap Doomben race 6 Saturday review
By guest reviewer Todd Burmester For those particularly interested in Brisbane racing, I thought I would take a look at the Open Handicap to be run at Doomben this Saturday – as it shapes as quite a competitive race. At the top of the market you have Steel Zip and Lucky Luna that are both last start winners so they have probably earned their place. Steel Zip, I thought was excellent at The Sunshine Coast last start beating the talented Ready To Rip. Prior to that he raced behind horses such as Spirit Of Boom and My Destiny, so you would think on class, he is the nominal pick. Digging a bit deeper however casts a doubt for me. His record at the track is only 1 win from 7 appearances and his record at the distance is 2 starts for 2 unplaced runs. The inside gate helps over the mile at Doomben but I like a horse to be proven over the distance. We get that in the shape of Lucky Luna who has had 10 starts at the trip for 2 wins and 5 minor placings. His record at Doomben is also better with 3 wins from 9 starts and 3 minor placings. The downside in comparison to Steel Zip is that Lucky Luna is 7 years old where as Steel Zip is still as such an up and coming 4 year old. The chances probably don’t stop there. Elusive Port and Shamardashing are two other runners with good records at Doomben. Due to being a smaller, tighter turning track, I think this aspect is important in assessing this race. Both of these horses were well held by Steel Zip last start but they do have some weight relief and as I keep saying, there’s the venue change. Rockdale and Chilled look to be the pace of the race but it would surprise me if either keep going all the way. I’ll tip Lucky Luna as the most in form horse likely to race well at the track and distance.
