Race 6 – Gilgai Stakes (1200m)
Selections: 1, 4, 7
SANTA ANA LANE (1) is first-up here. Generally fires second-up, but has run well first-up before. Ran 1.5 lengths behind Sunlight in the Newmarket and meets it six kilograms better here. Target is the Everest but should be forward for this. ZOUTORI (4) is a promising four-year-old who resumed with a terrific win down the straight. Can maintain rating here. SUNLIGHT (7) is at its third run in and should be ready to peak. Wasn’t suited at the Valley – drawn wide and got home hard. Won the Newmarket down the straight in the autumn
Race 7 – Turnbull Stakes (2000m)
Selections: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8
HARTNELL (1) is racing honestly. Maps well here and ran on nicely last time. Has won this previously. MR QUICKIE (3) defied SP last start first-up, flashing home late and running quickest last 600 / 400 / 200 of the day. Good record this trip and beyond. MYSTIC JOURNEY (4) appeared to have every chance second-up off a 28 day break. First time at 2000m here, but does have winning ways. Expect to roll forward from gate. Today is D-Day re Cox Plate hopes. ROSTROPOVICH (5) put in a good effort first-up, making good ground late. Distance will be no problem, has good claims if the two favourites fall over. FINCHE (6) ran well in Sydney at this distance. Maps well here and can hold rating. KINGS WILL DREAM (8) ran well first-up off a long spell and had every chance last start. Ran third to Winx in this last year. Expect to be fitter, also has claims if the two favourites fall over.
Race 8 – The Bart Cummings (2520m)
Selections: 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12
DAL HARRAILD (2) ran okay first-up off a long spell. Second-up here. Ran second in the Bendigo Cup second-up last year. Looks well graded, seems big odds. SURPRISE BABY (3) is a nice type but definitely a spruik horse. Stepping from 1600m to 2500m second-up. Seems well found even if it runs to best. VENTURA STORM (4) put in an honest effort with 60kgs last time out. Maps well here and has solid claims. ETYMOLOGY (7) has had three runs back off a spell. Out to right distance range now. Has good record at this trip. KING OF LEOGRANCE (9) is fourth-up in Australia. No luck last start, held up at vital stage before flashing home. Should be ready to run to best. WOLFE (10) looks a natural on-pacer. Ridden with a sit last time before being held-up. Good chance if reverting to normal tactics. SUPERNOVA (11) had no luck last start when too far back in a slowly-run race. Fitter here. Has run well at this trip in the past. TE AKAU CALIBURN (12) ran on nicely at first Australian start. Should strip fitter here. Will be strong late.
Race 9 – Edward Manifold Stakes
Selections: 2, 6, 7, 11, 14
BONVICINI (2) put in a good effort in Adelaide, running a good time. Has had a run in the distance range. EXCUSED (6) is the best of the on-pacers at Caulfield over the 1400m. Maps better here and should be stronger at the mile. MIAMI BOUND (7) is a nice filly who improved dramatically between runs last start. Soft on the line, hasn’t reached peak yet. SUBPOENAED (11) put in a good effort two starts back at Randwick. Second horse won at Flemington last Wednesday. Ran in a hot race next and got too far back. Better suited here. FASCINO (14) ran well last start from a good draw and has drawn similarly here. Didn’t have much luck in the straight.
