  • Trevor Lawson delivers his full Melbourne Cup Day quaddie, plus runner notes
  • First leg: Race 7, 3:00pm

Numbers: 2, 3, 4, 8, 11, 12, 13, 15, 18, 19, 20, 23 — 2, 8, 11, 15, 17 — 3, 4, 6 — 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 11

Race 7 – Melbourne Cup (3200m)

Selections: 2, 3, 4, 8, 11, 12, 13, 15, 18, 19, 20, 23

MER DE GLACE (2) won the Caulfield Cup, first time at 3200m here. Good chance, but looks unders. MASTER OF REALITY’s (3) best rating was third-up last prep, and it’s third-up here. O’Brien / Dettori / Williams combination, so clearly a big target here. Races on the pace. MIRAGE DANCER (4) ran well in the Caulfield Cup. First time at distance range. Overs. MUSTAJEER (8) hit the line nicely in the Caulfield Cup. First time at this distance range. FINCHE (11) put in a terrific Caulfield Cup run, caught wide throughout. Can improve on that here. PRINCE OF ARRAN (12) won the Geelong Cup and was second in the Herbert Power. Will be on the pace. RAYMOND TUSK (13) produced best figure last start, running fourth in the Ebor. Comes here in form. MAGIC WAND (15) put in a sound Cox Plate run. Can improve here. SURPRISE BABY (18) is the big Australian hope. Ran well second-up, jumping in distance. Comes through the Bart Cummings, like Almandin in 2016. CONSTANTINOPLE (19) was knocked down in the straight last start. Arguably could’ve won. IL PARADISO (20) is a northern hemsiphere four-year-old like Cross Counter last year. Produced best figure two starts back, running close third to Stradivarius. VOW AND DECLARE (23) worked home okay in the Caulfield Cup after covering ground. Looks a natural stayer and can run to new peak here.

Race 8 – Furphy Plate (1800m)

Selections: 2, 8, 11, 15, 17

YULONG PRINCE (2) got a bit too far back last start. Gets blinkers on and Nash goes on. SO YOU WIN (8) is racing consistently. Got too far back last start. LOOKS LIKE ELVIS (11) is racing consistently. Not much luck last start when held up in the straight. Better suited here. A SHIN ROOK (15) ran well in the Seymour Cup. Only has to hold that rating here. JUNIPAL (17) is racing well. Cut in the ground will help. Not much luck past couple of starts.

Race 9 – 4:40PM MSS Security Sprint (1200m)

Selections: 3, 4, 6

HAUNTED (3) put in a terrific run last start at Caulfield. Has won down the straight. MILWAUKEE (4) is a great horse down the straight. Freshened-up here. PARSIFAL (6) is racing well and has won down the straight before.

Race 10 – The Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (1400m)

Selections: 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 11

AKARI (2) ran well last start, beating a couple here. PRETTY BRAZEN (4) was strong late last start. Only has to hold that rating here. XILONG (5) won well over last two starts. Steps to 1400m first time. BETCHA FLYING (6) is racing well. Good effort last start in Listed race in Sydney. No fears over potentially wet track. MAYAASEH (9) ran on nicely in same race as Betcha Flying. CALIFORNIA SALTO (11) ran a good time at Newcastle. 1400m shouldn’t be a problem.

Include emergency IT’S KIND OF MAGIC (18) if it gets a run – it’ll be hard to beat.
