queen of the turf

The Queen of the Turf Stakes is a Group 1 weight-for-age race for fillies and mares held at Randwick Racecourse during The Championships, Sydney’s major autumn racing event. The Queen of the Turf is held on the second day of The Championships, and is marketed as the fillies and mares championship. It’s raced over 1,600 metres with prizemoney of $1 million. The race was known as the Coolmore Legacy from 2016 – 2020 for sponsorship reasons.

Prior to the introduction of The Championships, the Queen of the Turf was raced at Rosehill Racecourse over 1,500 metres.

PROBABEEL flew at Caulfield this prep, reaching a new career peak of 117 which would, frankly, dominate this field. She was a little suited by the pattern that day though so the figure might be a tad inflated, but she went very well. Last start at Moonee Valley she wasn’t suited by the pattern… thought a lot of horses weren’t that day so you can forgive that one. She goes great at the Randwick mile and I think she’ll end up getting in with a good run. The one to beat, clearly. Class mare.

ODEUM is the logical danger to the favourite. She’s a filly on the up and I think it’s clear we haven’t seen her top yet. She was good last start with no luck, and better suited up to the mile now. Sh maps ideally and should get every chance chasing Greysful Glamour in the run. Goes well.

RICH HIPS is my roughie in the race,. She’s consistently returning ratings around her top, which says to me there’s a new top coming. She’s closing out her races well, the mile suits, the pace suits and Bowman should suit. I am projecting to a new level here – so there’s always a danger in that – but I think she may have it in her.

ALL SAINTS EVE is another roughie I like a bit, and like Rich Hips I am projecting her to a new level to get her this price. Like Rich Hips she has been performing at her top level regularly and I think she has another one in her. Wide draw, but Marquand can go back and the pace helps, and they should be able to run on.

GREYSFUL GLAMOUR is the leader and I always like them. She makes her own luck out in front and will do the same here. She loves the Randwick mile. She’ll give a bold sight for her backers.

VANNA GIRL is a roughie with some chance, because we may not have seen her top yet. She went to her best resuming over the shorter 1350m, and that can often mean that there’s a new peak coming this prep when they get out to their best trip. It’s hard to really mark up what her top might be. She should get every chance on the map with Oliver on, too.
