Randwick Review – August 6th 2016

By: Mark Haywood

1st BIRDS OF TOKYO – Kathy O’Hara
2nd FIREBIRD FLYER – Tim Clark
3rd DEFROST MY HEART – Lester Grace (a)

Fairly slow start as Birds Of Tokyo went to the front ahead of Cilla on the inside of Defrost My Heart, followed bY Erika, Firebird Flyer and Harlem Lady settling a clear last.

Defrost My Heart had to continue without cover as Grace pushed her up to go with the leader and sit just off for the trip. Firebird Flyer tracked her in until the corner where Clark peeled off and went widest, with Cilla sticking to the fence back on the inside. Ultimately however they all boxed on for the minors as the leader kept accelerating and lengthening, making a mess of them and walking it in by six lengths

Watch: Birds Of Tokyo

1st LIE DIRECT – Deanne Panya (a)
2nd BRACES – Winona Costin
3rd STORM SYSTEM – Kerrin McEvoy

Panya was keenest as the gates opened and she took Lie Direct forward from out wide, settling in front as they left the straight, from Get On The Grange off the fence and Storm System in behind in third. Braces was next and wide also, followed by Thurston and Major Major at the rear.

Panya kept the speed on the leader and Jennings stuck close on Get On The Grange, the two pushing ahead to open up six lengths on the rest of the field as they hit the back of the track, with Storm System and Braces then having a further three lengths on the final two. Whilst the four pursuers would soon bunch up, the leaders kept it up and were soon 7 – 8 lengths from the field.

Storm System and Braces would then get going and eat into the break around the side, cornering just behind the leaders, where Lie Direct was still in front, and Get On The Grange was right under the pump. The chase had done them in however, Lie Direct breaking them to race away for a comfortable win by seven lengths.

Watch: Lie Direct

1st INVITATIONS – Tommy Berry
2nd DON’T TEASE ME – Kathy O’Hara
3rd LAST WITNESS – Tim Clark

Solid rain falling now and O’Hara pushed Don’t Tease Me through to lead from Texan Lad and War Jet back on the fence in third. Invitations and Three Sheets were next whilst favourite Last Witness snagged back to last.

Invitations stalked up the outside of War Jet as they turned, with Three Sheets still close and Clark peeling the favourite out wide for a run. Don’t Tease Me led them in the straight as Invitations poured on the pressure and raced to second with victory firmly in his sights. Berry would take him to the leader and go past, securing a solid win, as Last Witness ran handily (if a little late) for third).

Watch: Invitations

1st SNAPPY ONE – Deanne Panya (a)
2nd EXPLOSIVE SCENE – Andrew Adkins (a)
3rd ATTAINMENT – Brenton Avdulla

Skies clearing and a bit of a battle for the lead here, Panya pushing Snappy Tom through to lead, heading off Attainment with Striking Lago and Destined To Win settling next. A row of three then with High Tec, Tudor Sunrise and Explosive Scene caught wide, then Linsang, Princess Kashema and A Magic Zariz bringing up the rear.

Both Explosive Scene and A Magic Zariz were caught wide and made efforts to move up in the run, as Snappy One pushed ahead at the front with Avdulla forced to get right into Attainment. Yet another fight for second here as Snappy One just kept going – running away for an easy five-length win.

Watch: Snappy One.

1st TYCOON TARA – Blake Shinn
2nd REBEL DANE – Tommy Berry
3rd MOUNT NEBO – Jason Collett

Tycooin Tara took up the lead early from sharp favourite Rebel Dane and Mount Nebo caught a little wide, Big Money back on the fence and Wouldn’t It Be Nice trailing the small field.

No speed on as they sat in formation into the side, Big Money hugging the rail as Berry had the favourite looming up outside the leader as they straightened. The five of them spread across the track with little covering them, Big Money falling away as the rest went for home. Shinn got Tycoon Tara there, holding them out for a tough win from Rebel Dane and Mount Nebo on his outside.

Watch: none.

1st THRONUM – Tommy Berry
2nd MEDITERRANEAN – Blake Shinn
3rd MISS BENETEAU – Kathy O’Hara

Berry had Thronum up the inside to lead from Quick Feet and Lasqueti Spirit, who came the long way and punched on three-wide to get there. Uthred was next back on the rails, followed by hot favourite Mediterranean, Walk Right In a little deep and Miss Beneteau last the rail.

Quick Feet and Lasqueti Spirit kept the leader under pressure, attempting to slide up outside, as Miss Beneteau and Uthred owned the rail and Shinn waited patiently behind the speed on the favourite. The leader was swamped in the straight with Berry managing to just cling onto the lead, Miss Beneteau heading momentarily, before Thronum punched back and reclaimed it, holding off a fast finishing Mediterranean to win.

Watch: Thronum, Mediterranenan.

Race 7 – THE WALLABY CUP (1600m)

1st DUBAIINSTYLE – Brenton Avdulla
2nd SO WILLIE – Rory Hutchings
3rd KING’S OFFICER – Koby Jennings (a)

Koroibete was a clear leader from the start, jumping out to get a few lengths on the field led by stablemate Dark Eyes, with Dubaiinstyle moving up the outside and Uno Five back on the inside. Favourite King’s Officer was next but caught three-wide, outside So Willie and Suboric, with Quick Defence and Bring Luck at the rear.

Jennings soon slid King’s Officer up to improve, still deep but now sitting third. They went around the side a little wide, Koribete still leading them as Quick Defence stuck to the rail and moved up inside. He passed the leader in the final turn but it was Dubaiinstyle doing likewise around the outside, rushing to the lead as King’s Officer led the chase, still deep. King’s Officer and then So Willie would punch on wider, but it was all Dunaiinstyle, another one running away for a big win.

Watch: Dubaiinstyle

1st KNIT ‘N’ PURL – Kerrin McEvoy
2nd ALLEZ CHIVAL – Jess Taylor
3rd TENNESEE USSY – Jason Collett

Good battle for the lead with favourite Allez Chival coming through to win it from Typhoon Jolie coming across. Pinchme led the rest from Electric Power caught outside Knit ‘n’ Purl, then Tennessee Hussy, Rock On Zariz and a gap to Tree Of Jesse and Viaductress bringing up the rear.

Allez Chival controlled things into the straight and went a little wide, Typhoon Jolie still give chase just off whilst Knit ‘n’ Purl got a good run up the inside. A decent battle but Knit ‘n’ Purl too strong to take the chocolates.

Watch: none.

1st ENCOSTANATI – Deanna Panya (a)
2nd BURNING PASSION – Kerrin McEvoy
3rd BAYVIEW EMPEROR – Robert Thompson

Fortune Patch won the start from Encostanati and favourite Burning Passion. Specific Choice was next caught outside Ice Bucket, with Star Shaft back between them from Lasszou, Wudang Mountain caught deep, and Bayview Emperor back at the tail.

Very tight field throughout, Encostanati sliding up the inside in the turn to lead, as Ice Bucket, Burning Passion and Specific Choice peeled right out wide. Panya then put the foot down on the leader as was the story of the day, blowing the field away for a huge lead – Burning Passion rolled on valiantly to slice right into it at the line, but the result was never in doubt.

Watch: Encostanati, Burning Passion

Horses to follow: Birds Of Tokyo, Dubaiinstyle, Burning Passion.
