Runners to watch: Randwick, March 4th

Race 1 – Reisling Stakes (1200m)

Notes – Not game to put a pen through She Will Reign for the Slipper. She did beat third by five lengths and the winner found the better part of the track. As for the rest, none of them will be winning the Slipper. The winner Frolic looks like a real wet tracker with previous sound form on a soft track.

Race 2 – Todman Stakes (1200m)

Notes – Happy to say Menari didn’t handle the wet track, didn’t show the explosive turn of foot we have seen in previous starts. Still keep safe for the Slipper. Thought Showtime ran very well in the wrong part of the track, has raced very consistently behind all the top 2yos this preparation.

Race 3 – Fireball Stakes (1100m)

Conchita (5th) – First up and was leading on the rails, which was easily the worst place to be. Battled on very bravely down the straight behind a couple of good ones. Looks to have come back in good order.  One to follow in slightly easier grade.

Race 4 – Wenona Girl Quality (1200m)

Nancy (4th) – Second up and hooked to the outside fence and loomed up to win, then condition gave out in the final 100m. Is an above average mare and now peaks in fitness after this effort. She is one to follow in the coming weeks and from an astute stable.

Race 5 – Canterbury BMW Stakes (1300m)

Chautauqua (2nd) – Settled last and hunted through along the fence which was the worse going on the track. Drifted to the outside fence down the straight looking for the better going and just went down in a photo. Looks ready to peak now on that performance. Will be picking up a race this preparation.

Race 6 – Challenge Stakes (1000m)

Nothing of note in this race.

Race 7 – Randwick Guineas (1600m)

Invincible Gem (2nd) – The only filly in the field and led them up into the straight. The pattern and bias of the track was against it but she fought on bravely to only just go down. She is racing in excellent fashion since the change of tactics with her.  Keep following.

Race 8 – Aspiration Quality (1600m)

Nothing of note in this race.

Race 9 – Randwick City Stakes (2000m)

Astronomos (1st) – The superior wet track horse in the race and proved it yet again with a convincing victory, running away from them on the line.  If he is on a heavy again this preparation follow with real confidence.

With all races, treat with caution the form coming out of the day. The outside fence was the place to be and a lot of horses didn’t handle the very heavy conditions or couldn’t get to the superior part of the track. Don’t write off any horses that failed badly in today’s conditions.
