Race reviews

Race 1: Ern Jensen Funerals Handicap (1800m)

Note – The maiden He Ekscels enjoyed a nice run behind a slow pace and he sprinted through a gap 300m out winning untouched. Solid effort from Red Right Hand running on from well back and Soju Warrior was always handy and held on for third. Lack of tempo may make the form questionable.

Race 2: Sky High Mt Dandenong (2000m)

Note – Promising three-year-old Odeon heads to the South Australian Derby after taking care of the older horses with a soft win. Always travelled well and came from midfield with a sweeping run beating the consistent Hursley while Overberg was gallant after sitting three wide throughout near the pace.

Race 3: No Fuss Events Hire (1200m)

Dane Thunder (3rd): backed up a nice first-up effort with a fast finishing third. Held up when the winner made his run through then pulled plenty of late ground beaten about a length. Close to a win.

Note – Mr Sneaky gave away a start but was far too good, he did get the breaks getting through the field though. Wind Force stayed on from up on the pace to hold on for second from Dane Thunder who hit the line strongly.

Race 4: Changing Places Real Estate (1100m)

Note – Snitty Kitty sat off a solid tempo, took over on the bend and broke right away for a very soft win over her stablemate If Not Now When running on from last in an improved effort. Merriest ran an honest race for third. Moonlites Choice was a big drifter in betting and ran accordingly, may have found it too short.

Race 5: Throughbred Club Cup (1200m)

Indernile (4th): run off his feet and covered ground but plenty to like about the way he stuck to the task and produced the best last 200m of the race. Perhaps down a bit in grade he can pick up a race soon.

Note – Kobayashi led, didn’t settle the best early then stacked them up. Broke away around the bend and held a decisive margin.Al Passem was always second in the run and while no match managed to easily hold the odds-on favourite Doubt I’m Dreaming who appeared to have every chance.

Race 6: Next Payments Handicap (1200m)

Widgee Turf (6th): settled well back, stayed on the inside around the turn and was a bit flat footed but caught the eye the last 100m making up ground and went to the line full of running. More a 1400m horse and was first-up here.

Note – Wise Hero prevailed narrowly in a tight three way go. He enjoyed a nice run off the pace, made hard work of it but being first-up will be open to improvement. Bord De Gain tried to go with him and made a good fist of it while Katsuro had his chance but battled on gamely.

Race 7: LU Simon Builders (1100m)

Note – Revenge for Grey Street who got very close to Miss Vista last time but was able to turn the tables with a burst down the outside. Belsapphire worked through late into the minor money just ahead of Majestic Lass who seemed to have her chance fresh.

Race 8: Thoroughbred Club 50th Year (1440m)

Zebulon (5th): promising return from a year’s absence and he was probably a bit unlucky not to be right in the finish. He was shuffled back and checked off heels coming to the turn but closed off the race nicely late with an 11.40 last 200m. If he holds together he can win one soon.

Note – Perth Cup winner Star Exhibit finished strongly from the second half of the field after moving into the race coming to the turn. He’ll only improve with the run and extra distance. Charmed Harmony didn’t attack for the lead as usual but battled on for second edging out the leader Top Me Up.

Race 9: Treasury Wine Estates (1600m)

Note – Rhythm To Spare has ability but can be hard to catch, he was on his best form here taking an inside run on the turn and kicking well clear. No excuse for Fastnet Latina who was on the winner’s outside to the bend. The Chairman got up for third in a blanket finish for the minors.
