Race reviews: Caulfield, July 1st

Race 1: Schweppes Handicap (1200m)

Note – Lone Eagle produced a strong finish from near the tail to arrive just in time to down leader Pure Emotion, who fought hard after being softened up, with Nistaan an even effort in third though unable to match the winner’s sprint.

Race 2: Dream Thoroughbreds (2000m)

Note – A strong win to Kiwia who worked to find a spot outside the leader then put them away early in the straight. Savvy Dresser had a nice run throughout and ran to a clear second while All Out Of Love just cut the early leader Windbern out of third.

Race 3: Sheen Group Plate (1600m)

Cosmic Lights (3rd): might have been a bit stiff not to win after being held up early in the straight and again, slightly, as he was hitting top gear before driving into a close third. Ready to win one.

Note: Coldstone bounced back from a big disappointment at his previous start, enjoying a soft run on the fence then getting through at the right time to run down the leader Don’t Get Excited with Cosmic Lights closing late in third.

Race 4: Sheamus Mills Bloodstock (1100m)

Princess Of Queens (2nd): slashing first-up effort by a handy filly (on her day). Settled in the second half, eventually worked onto the back of the winner and charged at her to just miss.

Note – back to back wins for Unique Lovely who was in the right spot behind the speed then let down to hit the front and held off the flying Princess Of QueensClipper was always on the speed and she wasn’t disgraced in a close third.

Race 5: Tile Importer Handicap (1200m)

Note – very much dominated by those on the speed and Sullivan Bay led all the way and fought off the challenge of Grey Street, who had her chance, while Foreign Affair was always handy and boxed on well enough for third. Nothing made any significant ground.

Race 6: SECURECorp Handicap (1400m)

Note – Hard to take anything away from My Paisann who came from last on the fence on the home turn, weaving a path through then chasing down Revolving Door who looked the winner. Enigman was under pressure before the turn but kept coming for a close third.

Race 7: Moorookyle Park Handicap (1400m)

Note – big upset with Nesbo mowing them down first-up for the new stable. He was unwanted in betting and arrived just as Here To There got the better of the early leader Airalign. Not much of a race, really.

Race 8: Ladbrokes Handicap (1200m)

Portman (3rd): nice return from a consistent miler. Settled midfield and gained a couple of good runs through the field then really attacked the line late. In for another good prep.

Note – Leodoro was a good thing beaten two weeks earlier and the amazing last to first performance to win here underlined that fact. The leader Wind Force held on for second and only beaten a head or so, that shows how good the winner was. Portman an eye-catching first-up third.

Race 9: Quayclean Handicap (1800m)

Note – Radipole would have been unlucky had he not gained a late split to drive underneath Magic Consol late to win. He was travelling strongly but badly held up. Nice win. Lord Durante was right up on the pace all the way and stuck on for third at big odds.
