Runners to watch: Randwick, April 21st

Shane Adair race reviews, blackbookers and race notes from Saturday's Sydney metro meeting at Randwick.

Race 1 – TAB Highway Handicap  (1600m)

Note – The Highways are back and it was the consistent Nic’s Vendetta saluting after having a lovely run behind the leaders and getting a dream rails run to score. Good effort however a bit weary of taking the short price next start after having that run in transit. Ori On Fire found the lead fairly easy and controlled the speed he kicked well in the straight however the winner was just a touch to good. Northern River was very good running on well from well back to run third and a similar effort from Delivered who wasn’t the best away and was second last on turning and ran on well. Keymaster was trapped wide in the run and didn’t offer a lot in the straight. Count Cumani was just fair holding the same position throughout and never looking a winning chance. Going forward it was a very quick time event and Northern River is worth following in an event back on the country circuit. Continues to hold form well this preparation.

Race 2 – APN Outdoor Handicap (1100m)

Note – Anatola bolted in and in very quick time. Sitting outside the leader she cruised up in the straight and let down strongly to win very impressively and live right up to her very good trial effort. Test The World had a nice run behind the speed on the fence and hit the line well late to run second in what was a good first up effort. Dissolute was a good effort getting back and coming wide on turning he let down well to get into the money however never really looked a winning chance. The well backed Chalk was caught very wide and I would be forgiving that effort also Crafty Cop travelled a touch wide in transit and probably better for that run. Going forward hard to not be impressed with the winner sitting on pace and running time in winning it’s exactly how we like them as punters. Test the World also looks to have come back in good order.

Race 3 – TAB Hall Mark Stakes (1200m)

Note – Strong on pace victory to Burning Passion who sat outside the leader Oxford Poet and looked in trouble at the 200m however fought on strongly to just get the best of Oxford Poet who led and ran well however was every chance to claim victory. Dothraki who was every possible chance to claim victory, just struggles to win and claimed third. Firsthand was very good first up sitting last and running on well to just miss the money and is worth following. It was a better effort for Takedown today who has been running only fair of late. Going forward I’m happy to be with Firsthand next start who ran on very well in a race dominated by on pace runners. Will be fitter for that effort.

Race 4 – Frank Packer Plate (2000m)

Note – Tight finish in this and it was Higher Ground getting the bob in right on the line to salute. Sitting midfield off a good pace he grinded home the best to beat Tangled in second who didn’t go around a horse with a rails hugging ride. Had every possible chance to win the race. Holy Snow was third and came the widest of the placegetters turning for home which made the difference in the end. They put a nice gap into the field back to fourth. Roughie Savvy Ken led at a good pace and held on quite well in the straight for a race of lower grade next start. Going forward the placegetters were had a little bit on the rest of the field and this is very little between all three of them.

Race 5 – Hong Kong Jockey Club Carr Stakes (1400m)

Note  – Another very tight finish and it was Moss Trip collecting the prize. After being slowly away she got to the middle of the track and let down well to score in a very slick time event. Dyslexic was just out bobbed on the line and given a good run in transit and sprinted well. However just found the winner a touch to good. Manicure finished third and did a good job leading them up and kicking on strongly seeing both first and second both came for midfield or worse positions. So Far Sokool wasn’t far away in fourth however over raced a touch in transit and didn’t let down as sharp. These four pulled away from the rest of the field. Frolic was sound running on however was in similar position to Moss Trip when turning. Going forward I liked the run of the winner who sprinted very well late after getting back and Manicure who kicked on well in the straight after the strongly early tempo.

Race 6 – Champagne Stakes (1600m)

Note – Well ridden Damien Oliver! Seabrook got the job done with a rails hugging ride then switched off heels to sprint well to score. Good win. Bondi was second and met with some support in betting. Was given a nice run just behind the leaders and was every possible to chance to score. Solid performance. El Dorado Dreaming showed the last win was no fluke finishing third after being held up in the straight once he saw daylight he sprinted well and should of finished closer. Good effort again. Of the beaten brigade, the run of Guerrier in only second career start was good and Outrageous didn’t have the best of luck in the straight only getting clear late. Encryption was ok on pace and Long Leaf was forget effort after being trapped wide throughout. Going forward Seabrook is a very smart filly and I look forward to seeing her next preparation.

Race 7 – All Aged Stakes (1400m)

Note – Gutsy win to Trapeze Artist in the last G1 of the carnival wearing down Le Romain. Enjoying a nice run behind the leaders he peeled to the middle of the straight a fought it out well to wear down a brave Le Romain who sat outside the leader and kicked strongly in the straight. Winner was just too good. Showtime in third led them up and gave a good kick in the straight to hold third in what was a good performance. Hartnell was sound to the line in the straight just found the placegetters a bit too good. Not a lot else made up ground from the tail due to the final 600m split of the race. Going forward you have to stick with all the placegetters which were all very strong on pace efforts in very quick time. If any of them head to Brisbane I want to be with them.

Race 8 – JRA Plate (2000m)

Note – $26 chance Tally got the chocolates in this sitting midfield on the fence and sprinting well to score over Nettoyer who had got well back in the run and ran home soundly without ever looking a real winning chance. It was a good effort for something a bit easier. Rising Red did an excellent job holding on to third after sitting forward on a very strong early speed. Of the beaten runners it was a big forgive to Arbeitsam who missed the start and settled towards the tail. Still ran home ok and Interlocuter was a pass in the run to the line. Not a lot else made an impression on the event. Going forward Nettoyer keeps teasing us and I am forgiving Arbeitsam and I think there is a race for Rising Red soon based on that strong on pace performance.

Race 9 – Nathan’s Famous Hotdogs  Handicap (1400m)

Note – Tribal Wisdom just got in to win the lucky last enjoying a good rails run just behind the leaders he didn’t have to go around a runner and held of the fast finishing Osborne Bulls in second who probably just got to far back in the run. He rattled home late and looked a moral beaten. Savapinski led them up and did a good job in the straight to hold onto third after setting a strong early speed.Very good first up effort. I also quite liked the effort of New Tipperary who was first up and worked to the line well late. Going forward must stick with Osborne Bulls and the first up efforts of both Savapinski & New Tipperary were both very encouraging.
