Runners to watch: Randwick, December 16th

Shane Adair race reviews, blackbookers and race notes from Saturday's Sydney metro meeting at Randwick.

Race 1 – ANZ Bloodstock News (1400m)

Note – Nice win here to Savatiano sitting midfield just off the pace and quickened well to put pay to them in a few bounds. The race fitness was a telling point. Calculated was a good first up effort running on well and will be fitter for that effort. Awesome Pluck was the short priced favourite and had a nice run on pace however very little in the straight, however will be fitter for the run. Nothing else had much of an impression. Going forward stick with Calculated will be fitter for that effort and performed well last preparation.

Race 2 – TAB Highway Handicap (1100m)

Note – Very tight finish in this however punters got it right with short priced favourite Victorem saluting…just! Under a length separated the first 5 across the line. After sitting just off the pace he got the gaps and scrambled over the line. All Stand was very good in running second. Sitting outside the leader he gave a good kick and just got nailed right on the line. Under The Thumb got back and rattled home to run third in a nice effort and probably wins if the race goes another 50m. Elle’s Nel was back and wide and ran home well to just miss the placings, showing the two victories prior were no fluke. Not a race I can get to excited over, however All Stand was very good on pace and continues to hold his form this preparation.

Race 3 – Christmas Cup (2400m)

Note – It was a case of the usual suspects in this event. Vassal saluted in this time have a soft run just worse than midfield and quickened to well in the straight to score. Odds on pop Broadside was every possible chance leading at a steady tempo. His record is showing a horse that can’t get 2400m. Prince Cheri was a much improved effort  and looked the winner hallway down the straight. Races well at this trip and can pick one of these up in the coming weeks. Nothing else gave a yelp in this. Going forward not too keen to be following anything with any great confidence.

Race 4 – Inglis Nursery (1000m)

Note – Best ride won with Irish bet getting a nice run behind the strong early speed and was able to quicken well to score on debut. Ragged Rascal was very good on pace sitting 3-4 wide and held on very well to run second. Canyonero ran on soundly from midfield to finish third. Two from the Tony McEvoy yard worth following out of this are Logan River & Sanctimonius both travelled wide and well back in there first attempt at the Sydney way of going and both hit the line as good as anything. Going forward plenty will be improved out of this so don’t write off any failures. I did like the runs of the McEvoy pair and the winner looks a natural racehorse.

Race 5 – Catanach’s  Handicap (1200m)

Note  – Strong front running effort from Anatola find an easy lead and kicking very strongly up the rise to score well and not giving anything else a look in. O’Rachael was solid in running second running on soundly after having a good run behind the speed. Machinegun Jubs was good in running third after being slightly held up in the straight. She never looked a winning chance however was sound to the line. Due to the dominance of the winner few very made an impression. I would be forgiving to favourite In Times Of War she was a long way back and wide and pulled her head off in the run. Going forward it’s all about the winner solid performer and if can reproduce that effort next start goes close again.

Race 6 – Right2drive Handicap (1600m)

Note – 3 out of 3 for Sedanzer this preparation after sitting a touch wide in the run she peeled out to the middle of the course and won very comfortably. Racing in very good form and looks like will handle the class rise. Keep following. Zourkhan was a very sound second first up sitting just behind a good speed he battled to the line well. Fitter and looking for the step up in trip next start. Xebec at a huge price ran on well from the tail to run third in a marked improvement from last start. Dreamforce over raced in the lead and knocked up halfway down the straight. Chatelard found a bit of trouble in the straight and should have finished closer and will be fitter for that effort. Goiung forward all about the winner. She is low flying at the moment.

Race 7 – Villiers Stakes (1600m)

Note – What a race! Well worth a look at the replay. Crack Me up won the race however it was all about runner up Cabeza De Vaca who raced 12+ lengths in front in a bold dashing display, holding on until the shadows of the post when Crack Me Up who ran on best from midfield late to win. Great race. Race favourite Interlocuter ran on well late to run third from well back in the field. They all had to run on with break neck speed of the leader. Mister Sea Wolf ran on sound enough without impressing. Going forward stick with the runner up Cabeza De Vaca huge effort in running second and will win a lot more races with a repeat effort next start.

Race 8 – Razor Sharp Quality (1200m)

Note – Good win to Zestful sitting wide from midfield and letting down very in straight to score in a very tight finish over the well tried I Thought So in second who was every possible chance to win for mine however did race well. These two cleared right away from third who was Kuro at a nice each way price who had a nice run in transit and fought on well to finish third. Of the beaten bridge Calanda ran on soundly after not having the best luck in the straight. Forgive efforts to Sir Plush & Samantha who both raced wide on pace. Chetwood raced on pace and dropped out sharply at the 200m. I would be checking the steward’s report there. Going forward happy to be with both first and second out of this event as they put a nice margin between themselves and the rest of the field.

Race 9 – Tab.com.au Handicap (1400m)

Note – 3 in a row for Uptown Lad sat very wide for the last 800m but that was no problems for him as he sprinted well from the midfield position to score again. Keep following him as he continues to hold his form this preparation. Savvan ran on well from the tail to finish second and looks ready to win in something slightly easier. Siren’s Fury was sound from the tail running third. Of the rest race favourite Malaise was every chance for mine having a nice run behind the speed. Redouble sat outside the leader and battled on well to just miss the placings and I would forget Powerline went around as was trapped wide throughout. Going forward stick with the winner as he is flying and Savvan if he drops in grade next start.
