Runners to watch: Randwick, January 13th

Shane Adair race reviews, blackbookers and race notes from Saturday's Sydney metro meeting at Randwick.

Race 1 – Highway Handicap (1600m)

Note – Very tight betting event with 9 of the 10 runners under $10 at jump time. Newtown Bluebag got the job done in a solid performance sitting wide with a trail and proved to strong down the straight to score over Fastquest who got well back and ran on well late to run second at the big odds of $31. Fui San led them up and held on well for third. So It Is worked to line soundly without ever looking a winning chance. I would be forgiving to the runs of Danetrille who sat three wide on speed and General Harmony who didn’t see a lot of clear galloping room in the straight and should of finished closer.

Race 2 – ATC Membership Sprint (1000m)

Note – Very tight and competitive finish with only 2.3 Lengths covering the first 7 across the line. Pendeloque saluted are having a good run behind the leaders and kicking on well in the straight when challenged in the straight. From Within was second and turned almost last and ran on well in the straight to just miss. Kennedy finished third and got into abit of an awkward position in the run and turned wide. He fought on well in the straight without a lot of room. Worth noting the run of Roman Typhoon who struck a bit of interference in the straight and hit the line as good as anything once clear. Going forward very even contest, however Kennedy and Roman Typhoon look worth following at their next starts.

Race 3 – TAB Handicap (2400m)

Note – Case of the usual suspect here. Cordero made in 3 on end with another good strong staying victory. Sitting last in a good tempo race he ran down the well specked Waking Moment in the final 100m to score. These two put a gap into third who was Rock On Ivy who ran on soundly from the tail in the straight and a good effort for something a bit easier next start. Now for the beaten runners! Lead Choreographer was given a poor ride taking off way to early and I would be prepared to forgive that effort along with Great Glen who was gone before turning and I would want to be checking the stewards report. Richard Of Yorke wasn’t sighted in the straight after having a good run in transit to run on.

Race 4 – Book Summer Hospitality Today Handicap (1200m)

Note – Tip Top won in tough fashion sitting on pace and kicking back strongly once clearly headed to score second up this preparation. Reach For Heaven was well tried in betting and didn’t have the best run and found the front however just ran out of condition late to run second. Thaad ran third and had a soft run behind the leaders and don’t have to go around a horse. Bratislava offered very little after running on pace and knocked up down the straight. Going forward I would be sticking with Reach For Heaven fitter for that run and betting today suggested she wont be far away from the winners stall this preparation.

Race 5 – TAB Rewards Handicap (1200m)

Note  – Nice victory to Kawaikini who was well supported late in the betting ($5-$3.5). Sitting a litte bit worse than midfield the mare sprinted quickly in straight in to score in good fashion. Keep following. Machinegun Jubs was solid in running second however did have a nice run behind the speed and was every chance to beat the winner. Both Leami Astray who ran third and Reward For Fashion were solid on pace after running them along early in the event. Nonpareil didn’t offer much sitting near to last she could go with the winner when she sprinted. Going forward I would be sticking with the winner has been up for a while now however continues to race well this preparation.

Race 6 – Maroubra Mile (1600m)

Note – Dreamforce did it again with another good on pace victory. Sitting outside the leader he quickened sharply at the 300m to put a gap on them and score over the fast finishing Morton’s Fork who ran on well from the tail and looks close to a peak performance now after two runs back from a spell. Liapari ran on from the rear to finish third without threatening the first two. Supply ‘N’ Demand offered very little in the straight after having a nice run. Going forward the winner continues to race well and his very hard to beat when he gets a soft lead. Morton’s Fork is getting very close to a win.

Race 7 – #THERACES Handicap (1400m)

Note – Exciting finish! The well supported ($3 – $2.4) Samadoubt controlled and kicked strongly in the straight and looked the winner at the 200m however got the stitch very late and was swamped by the winner Voilier in the final 50m who had a soft run at the tail and hooked out to the middle and let down well to pick up the winner. Third went to Eusebio who was a touch worse than midfield and ran on soundly in the straight to finish close behind the first two. New Universe ran on fairly along the fence from the rear however didn’t have to go around a runner.  Going forward the run of the race was Samadoubt who led at a good clip and kicked strongly and almost held on. The run on horses I believe were entitled to finish off well.

Race 8 – ATC Owners Benefit Card Handicap (1400m)

Note – Sugar Bella continued on here winning way ($1.4) with another comprehensive victory. Sitting just behind the leaders she quickened well and won by 2.3 lengths. More wins coing for her as she goes through the grades. Aquatic was a good second over racing mid race and fought it out in the straight to into the money. Ghostly ran on soundly for third and has now have two runs back from a spell and both times has ran into a smart one. Another who looks ready to win this preparation. Nothing else made much of an impression of the event. Going forward obviously stick with the winner she is smart, however I though both Aquatic & Ghostly look close to winning this preparation.

Race 9 – Handicap (1800m)

Note –Emperor’s Way well ridden got the job done in the last. Sitting midfield he got the split and the 200m and sprinted quickly to score well over Atlantic Fox who had a similar good run and was every chance in running second. Gamblestown ran on well late to get third and was a nice effort for something a bit easier next start. Nothing Box was every chance in running fourth. Vaucluse Bay is ready for the step up to 2000m and will be competitive as he worked to line soundly from the tail. Hurricane Harbour ran was sound on pace chasing the leader and kicked on well late and will be hard to beat back on the provincial circuit.
