Runners to watch: Randwick, July 7th

Shane Adair race reviews, blackbookers and race notes from Saturday's Sydney metro meeting at Randwick.

Race 1 – #THERACES Handicap  (1200m)

Note  – One act affair to kick of proceedings with Helaku sitting midfield in the run and one off the fence letting down with a good sprint to win by 4 lengths eased down on the line. Outsider Blast was second and sat on the winners back in run however just couldn’t go with the winner in the straight. It was a solid performance for an easier event and a good debut. Thinkin’ Big was third and sat just behind the leaders in the run. He was every chance for mine. The easing favourite Marmaris was last on turning and ran on soundly down the middle of the straight, however never looked a winning chance. Albert’s No Pussy was specked in the betting and led them up however offered nothing in the straight and dropped out. Going forward you have to stick with the winner who has now made it two in row and was a class above those horses today. Blast was a good debut and a maiden win isn’t far away for him.

Race 2 – TAB Highway Handicap (1200m)

Note – All the way victory to Highway Sixtysix.  The easing favourite found a soft lead and kicked strongly in the straight to fight off a wall of challenges and get home narrowly over Nicconita who sat last in the run and came the widest on turning. She let down well in the straight however the winner just a bit to strong late. Solid performance. Jounama at a big price finished third and was a very good performance. Trapped wide throughout and let down well in the straight to only narrowly go down. If she can get back onto a firmer track and weaker class she will go close next start. Roman Typhoon didn’t have the clearest path in the straight and should of finished in the placings. The first fourth across the line gapped the rest and I would be looking any further back

Race 3 – Randwick Mayor’s Cup (1200m)

Note – In a very tight finish it was only 1.1 lengths that covered the first five acroos the and it was Envy Of All who saluted in this event. Sitting right behind the speed he let down well and in a tight driving finish won narrowly over Revenire who was every chance after getting onto the winners back in the run. Bella Success was a clear last on turning and came the widest into the straight and made good ground to run third. The other equal favourite Bombarding led them up and kicked strongly however was swamped late. You Make Me Smile held the rails position on pace and a lot like Bombarding was swamped late.  Going forward a very tight finish with very little covering the first five across the line. Not a race I would be rating highly going forward however, I liked the effort of Bella Success who looks to peak in condition next start.

Race 4 – Half Yearly Membership (1600m)

Note – Small field however it was a strong on pace win to La Chica Bella in this event. After sitting outside the leader she quickened well and fought off a late challenger to win well. Sepoy Acheva was second, well back and came the widest into the straight to chased hard however couldn’t reel in the winner. These two gapped the rest. Touch Of Mink battled on into third however never looked a winning chance. Nothing else made an impression in this event and going forward I would only want to be with first and second.

Race 5 – Winter Racing (2400m)

Note  – Nice victory to Ombudsman who sat a touch worse than midfield in the run and was able to find clear running in the straight and let down to record a soft victory really on the line. Only Tiger continued his good form running second and trying hard in the straight to go with the winner. Another win won’t be far away if he can continue racing in this vain. Diamond Star Halo led them up and tried hard in the straight held onto third. She is still eligible for a maiden so a win in weaker class is not far away with a repeat effort. The race favourite Nahuel had a soft run in transit however just plugged away to the line and was every chance and something must have been amiss with Plymouth Road who was well beaten, so I would be forgiving of that effort. Going forward if Diamond Star Halo gets back to a more suitable race she will be winning very soon based on that effort.

Race 6 – TAB Rewards (1400m)

Note – Big win! Seahampton came from the clouds late after settling well back in the run. She came very wide in the straight and looked like running a nice second or third however gre wings late to claim victory in the shadows of the post to score. Excelsior at a big price ran very well sitting outside the leader and kicked strongly. However just found the winner too good. Oria led at a good clip and kicked strongly aswell in the straight. Just weakened late to run third. Both Island Missile & Popular who were both well in the market were just both steady to the line and never looked a winning chance. Going forward I like the winners effort. In a race where on pace runners dominated she was the only runner to take many lengths off these runners and claim victory. Both second and third were very good on pace efforts and repeat performances in similar or weaker class will have them both in the finish again.

Race 7 –Wallaby Cup  (1800m)

Note – Good win to Just Shine who was well ridden with cover in a midfield postion and popped out into clear running in the straight and let down well to score comfortably on the line over Carzoff who sat behind the leader and got clear running however the winner let down a bit too sharp for him. That was his first run after 13 weeks off so will be improved with that run. Curragh was well back on turning for home and let down well in the straight to run a nice third. Dagny was every chance and raced a bit one paced in the straight. Karavali raced a lot closer today and was beaten quickly once turning for home. I would be forgiving of that effort. Going forward I would be sticking with the winner Just Shine who won up to 2000m last preparation and is from a strong yard so a step up in trip looks ideal.

Race 8 – Tab.com.au Handicap (1300m)

Note – The swoopers got home in this event and it was Philosophy down the outside rail and under the shadows of the stands sprint very well to score well over Redouble who was in a similar postion to the winner on turning and let down well in the straight, however the winner was too good. Handfast was midfield on turning for home and let down solid enough fashion to run third however never looked a winning chance. Best Guess was the best of the runners who raced forward in the run and tried hard in the straight. Brook Magic set the speed and folded up in the final 200m. Possibly went a bit too hard in front today.  The winner always showed well above average ability and now she has won might just go on with it. Redouble let down well in the straight and looks ready to win next start

Race 9 – Australian Turf Club Sprint (1000m)

Note – Noble Joey at a good price saluted in the last. Sitting second in the run and able to get out wider in the straight which was the preference at this stage of the day to hold off She Knows in the final 100m to score. She Knows ran her usual honest race and looked the winner however Noble Joey was just to strong late. She Knows doesn’t know how to run a bad one. Bandipur was third and sat very wide in the run and came the widest in the straight in what was a much better effort from the first up flop in the heavy. I liked the effort of Tip Top who was last on turning and came down the worst part of the straight however  took many lengths off the winners. Worth following. Going forward I want to be with Tip Top who ran on very well late first up and was a winner last preparation at 1400m.
