Runners to watch: Randwick, March 3rd

Shane Adair race reviews, blackbookers and race notes from Saturday's Sydney metro meeting at Randwick.

Race 1 – TAB Highway Plate  (1600m)

Note – Fui San won a drama filled first event. After being given a lovely ride just behind the leader he switched off heels and sprinted quickly to score in good style. Mister Marmalade was last on turning and ran on well to finish second at very good each way odds. Celtic Trail was another who worked to the line soundly from a midfield position to finish third at a huge price. Race favourite Volpe was restricted for room in the straight and once clear was sound enough to the line and So It Is seemed to have every chance for mine in the run. Keymaster was scratched at the gates and It’s A Lottery went amiss during the run.

Race 2 – Tahiti Travel Connection (2000m)

Note – Just Shine made it three in a row with another good victory sitting just behind the speed and sprinting well in the straight to score over Tamarack who sat outside the leader in the run and gave a good fight in the straight just was no match for the winner late. The Getaway in third was given a perfect ride from J Parr and scrapped into the money. Race favourite Almost Court led them up into the straight and just couldn’t give today to fight off the challengers and finished fourth. Xebec was every possible chance in finishing fifth. Not much else made an impression on the race. Going forward stick with the winner Just Shine. The Claire Cunningham stable is low flying at present in NSW.

Race 3 – Skyline Stakes (1200m)

Note – Santos got there…just! Sitting outside the leader he fought on like a caged lion to hold off the challengers in the final 200m. Spin ran on well to finish second after being held up for a run in the straight he switched back to the fence and hit the line well. Legend Of Condor finished well for third after siting three wide the trip and kept fighting to the line in what was another good performance. It was only 1.4 lengths for 1st to 6th across the line so there isn’t a lot between them all going forward. I think we can place Spin into the black book who will be improved with the first up effort

Race 4 – Sweet Embrace (1200m)

Note – Very good victory to the Melbourne visitor Seabrook sitting wide in the run she sprinted to well in the straight to overhaul the race favourite Fiesta who had a nice run in transit and di run well however just found the winner too good today. Into The Abyss was the best of the on pace runners sitting outside the leader and holding onto third which was a good performance. I thought the run of the well specked Sweet Ava was good working to line soundly. Both Setsuna & Adamina looked abit plain on face value missing the placings. Going forward happy to be with the winner who was very impressive and keep Sweet Ava safe who worked to the line well in the straight.

Race 5 – Liverpool City Cup (1300m)

Note  – Crack Me Up ran on very well from a worse than midfield position to score over Care To Think the race favourite who sat wide on speed and fought on well in the straight to hold second. Burning Passion worked home well from a similar position to the winner on turning to hold third. The run of Egg Tart first up was full of merit hitting the line well from a long way back. These four put abit of a gap on the rest of the field. Arbeitsam was unable to find the lead which he tends to do his best racing from & Interlocuter just worked to the line and will be better for the run and a step up in trip. Going forward I would be happy to be any of the first four across the line next start. Special mention to Care To Think who was tough on pace after working in the run and Egg Tart who flashed home late.

Race 6 – Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m)

Note – One act affair in this and it was the champ Winx demolishing her rivals yet again. Sitting worse than midfield she loomed up at the 300m under a throttle hold from Bowman and exploded to win eased down by 7 lengths. It was actually daylight running second however Prized Icon was second and ran well for something a bit easier next start. Classic Uniform was third and had a nice run just behind the leaders and fought on to run into the money. Going forward I would be sticking with Prized Icon who continues to race well and looks to peak in fitness next start for mine.

Race 7 – Surround Stakes (1400m)

Note – Strong win to Shoals sitting outside the leader and fighting on strongly in the straight to fight off the challenges in the final 200m. Torvill was excellent at $17 sitting three wide at the tail and running home very well to finish second and showed the first up run was no fluke. Rimraam had the run of the race just behind the pace and solid enough in finishing third however every chance. Shumookh was honest on pace leading them up however was swamped late to miss the money. Alizee the race favourite drifted a touch further back that ideal however still was very plain on face value just working to the line without looking a real threat. Moss Trip was good for something easier and I would be forgiving to Unforgotten who was disappointing and a lot better than that effort. Going forward it’s an even bunch of fillies and I would be running into the short odds about any of them next start in similar grade.

Race 8 – Guy Walter Stakes (1400m)

Note – Very stylish win to Dixie Blossoms who was a class above these sitting towards the tail and getting to the outside and sprinting to well to score. Raiment was good running second sitting wide and sprinting well just found the winner to good. Francaletta led them up and was solid in holidn onto third placing. Sharp improvement today from Nettoyer finishing fourth watch as the distances increase now. She has ability. Aide Memoire was held up for long periods of the straight and should of finished a lot closer and I would forget Danish Twist was ridden upside down to hold a more forward position. That’s not her go. Going forward the winner is all class and second was very good, however I’m interested to see Nettoyer & Aide Memoire at their next starts who were both good today and will be a chance in something a bit easier next start

Race 9 – Championship Hospitality Handicap (1200m)

Note – Osborne Bulls saluted in the last after being a well tried favourite. Sitting a bit worse than midfield and finishing off like an above average horse to score. Keep following. Ghostly was good on pace finishing second after sitting outside the leader. Star Reflection sat wide and battled on well to hold on to third. Both Lovani & No Interest ran on soundly without ever looking a winning chance. Not much else made an impression and going forward stick with Osborne Bulls who looks to have come back in good order.
