Runners to watch: Rosehill, February 3rd

Shane Adair race reviews, blackbookers and race notes from Saturday's Sydney metro meeting at Rosehill.

Race 1 – Your Local Greengrocer (1100m)

Note – Charlayne kicked off proceedings with a solid victory making it 2 from 2. Sitting behind the leaders she was gifted a dream rails run and sprinted well enough to score. Problem Solver was second and sat a clear last in the run and came home very well and will pick up more races this preparation. Shiekha had a good run in transit and battled on solid enough to run a placing. All other runners didn’t offer a lot. Going forward I would be reluctant to take a short quote about the winner as she was handed the race. Problem Solver in hopefully something a bit easier next start looks like a good play as she has comeback well this preparation.

Race 2 – Canonbury Stakes (1100m)

Note – Small field greeted the starter and favourite punters made it 2 from 2 with the short priced favourite Performer saluting…just! After having a good run behind the leaders he peeled to the middle of the track and let down well to clearly head Stratosphere who led them up into the straight in the final 200m however Stratosphere kicked back sharply and only narrowly went down right on the line. These two put a good gap into third who was Exceltic and second favourite who had a good run in transit and just couldn’t go with the first two in the straight. Going forward both the first two will be better for the runs and look to have above average ability at this stage.

Race 3 – Widden Stakes (1100m)

Note – Fiesta did a very good job to score first up after sitting behind the speed and being held up in the straight once she saw daylight she sprinted well to reel in the winner. They ran about 4-4.5 lengths quicker than the boys division in the race before. Adamina was second and ran an excellent race on debut. Setting a strong early pace she kicked on well in the straight to narrowly go down at the big odds of $31. River Bird was third and ran along soundly along the fence for third as she didn’t have to go around a horse in the run. Secret Lady the race favourite travelled wide on pace and I would be forgiving of that effort. Similar situation for Into The Abyss who travelled wide and met with interference in the straight. Going forward stick with the first two. Fiesta was very good in winning after striking trouble in the straight and will be better for that effort and Adamina was very strong on pace for a debut effort.

Race 4 – Sydney Markets Foundation Handicap (1500m)

Note – Been up for what seems forever but Cellarman won again! Make it 3 from the last 4. Beautifully ridden by Shinn who saved ground and got the splits at the right time and quickened well enough to score. King Darci was well backed and led them up and tried hard in the straight however just was no match for the winner who just had the softer run. Flow was favourite and every chance for mine after having a nice run in transit just behind the speed. Can’t make much of an excuse for the rest as these three put a good gap in them back to fourth. Going forward not too much to report out of this event the first three are consistent solid performers and will be competitive in anything of similar class next start.

Race 5 – TAB Highway Plate (1500m)

Note  – Mate Story who was well backed jumped well from an outside gate and sat outside the hot pot Acquittal, these two raced about 5 lengths clear of third and never gave anything else a look in. In a two horse war in the straight it was Mate Story proving just a touch to strong. Acquittal jumped away only fairly and mustered speed to lead that could have been the difference in the end. It’s A Lottery tried hard in the straight running on soundly to hold third however never really looked a winning chance. Only other worth of mention is So It Is who worked to the line well. Going forward if Acquittal can sort out its barrier isues and jump away clean there will be more races coming is his very soon.

Race 6 – Freshmark Handicap (1500m)

Note – Good performance from  the well backed Bye See who was given a good run just behind the leaders and quickened well enough in the straight to hold on. Travancore who was a big drifter was good in second getting well back and running on well in the straight. Outsider Ready For Success ran on well from back in the field in a very good first up effort. Will be a good chance in something abit easier next start. Samadoubt took up his standard role as pace maker however ran out of steam in the final 200m. Back to 1300m probably suits better for him. Bring Luck who at the big odds fell out the gates and was a clear last and ran on well to run fourth in what was a good effort. Going forward  the race winner had a dream run and wouldn’t want her over much further than this trip. Ready For Success looks to have come back in good order and Bring Luck getting up to the 1900+ range looks ready to run into the money

Race 7 – Expressway Stakes (1200m)

Note – Big one of the day and it was the smart Trapeze Artist saluting. Well backed and sitting just outside the leader he sprinted to well at the 300m to hold on in an impressive first up performance. Showtime ran on well for second after getting well back and looks to have come back well. Race favourite Addictive Nature got tightened for room at the 200m after sitting behind the leader. It was a solid performance however not sure if he would of won anyway. I liked the first up performance of the VC Derby winner Ace High who only got warm late and was hitting the line as good as anything. Global Glamour was every chance for mine sitting outside Addictive Nature and was just ok in the straight. Going forward stick with Ace High as the distances increase, looks to have come back well.

Race 8 – Foodbank Handicap (2000m)

Note –High Opinion got the job done in this event sitting on the speed just outside the elader he quickened to well in the straight to hold off the fast finishing Gamblestown in second who ran on well from the tail again. More Energy was another who got well back and hit the line in solid fashion. Vaucluse Bay did race a touch wide however offered very little in the straight in a disappointing effort. Going forward it’s very hard to trust the form out of these staying events. Gamblestown continues to race well without winning and looks a big threat in something a touch easier.

Race 9 – Fresh For Kids Handicap (1300m)

Note – The big day for K McEvoy continued when he booted home Don’t Give A Damn who led and controlled the speed and kicked well in the straight to record a good first up victory. Insensata drifted back to last and ran home well along the fence to run second and looks ready to peak in the next couple of runs. Wild Heart sat just behind the leaders and was every chance for mine in running third in what was a solid performance. Kaonic loomed up in the straight however ran out of condition late and will be improved from that performance. Going forward stick with the winner. Has very good ability and can pick up another race for two this preparation.
