Runners to watch: Rosehill, May 5th

Shane Adair race reviews, blackbookers and race notes from Saturday's Sydney metro meeting at Rosehill.

Race 1 – TAB Rewards Handicap  (1100m)

Note – Gem Song flew late to get the cash in first. Getting well back in the run and looking like it would run a unlucky second he flew late to nab Miss Invincible right on the line who led at a strong pace and kicked strongly in the straight. It was a good effort. The $101 shot Brilliant Mind was third and every chance in the run to pick up the winner however was a good effort for something easier. The placegetters put almost three lengths back to fourth. Of the beaten runners, River Bird worked to the line fairly and the well backed favourite Roosevelt lobbed into a nice position in the run however was gone not long after turning for home. Might want to check the stewards report. Going forward, all here placegetters were good efforts and happy to be with them next start.

Race 2 – #Theraces Handicap (1200m)

Note – Small field faced the starter and it was an exciting event with Goldfinch shooting out to a huge lead turning for home and being run down in the final 100m by the eventual winner Sedition who sat second and was left with the job of chasing the leader. Fox Swift ran on strongly late to get second and Goldfinch fell in third after the very strong early pace in what was a good effort. Star Sensation was slowly away and the pattern of the race made it very hard to get home and I would be slightly forgiving for that run. Going forward I wouldn’t be writing of Star Sensation & Intuition both were easy in betting and pattern of the race didn’t turn out to suit them. Should both be better for the run.

Race 3 – Handicap (1800m)

Note – Impressive victory to Live And Free who sat just behind the leaders and got a good rails run and sprinted well to win running away by over three lengths on the line over Primitivo who chased hard in the straight but was just no match for the winner.  Almighty Crown was third and in a similar position to the winner before turning however was under pressure. He found again late in the final 200m to run third. The supported Animalia worked to the line without ever looking a winning chance. Going forward it was all about the winner who looked to relish the step up in trip and looks like 2000m+ will be right up its alley. Nice victory.

Race 4 – Flexi 6 Membership Sprint (1100m)

Note – Very tight finish and it was Epidemic first up finishing off hard late to score right on the line over O’rachel who was given the perfect run in transit and looked the winner until the shadows of the post. Zonk led them up and gave a good kick in the straight and just ran out of steam in the final 100m being overhauled late. Will be better for that effort. Rebel Miss was sound running on and came the widest on turning. Very little between them on the line and going forward I want to be with Epidemic who was first up and hit the line very well and showed last preparation to have ability and also Zonk who’s condition just gave out in the final 100m and will pick up a race this preparation with natural improvement.

Race 5 – TAB Highway Plate (1500m)

Note  – Another open TAB Highway and it was a big win to Valree missing the start by two lengths and settling back in the field she made a run along the rails to score well over Volpe who was well tried in betting and had a nice run. Ran well however was every chance to salute. Similar effort was seen from Central Witness who had a nice run and got clear at the right time and worked to the line sound enough to finish third. The race favourite Northern River was just ok. Looked to be in the finish after having a nice run behind the speed however couldn’t go with the placegetters late. Going forward have to be with the inform Valree has won 3 from 4 this preparation and doesn’t look like ending anytime soon based on this performance.

Race 6 – Lord Mayors Cup (2000m)

Note – Nice win and return to form for Our Century who was specked in betting. Sitting a touch wide early in the run he just proved too strong in the straight to win going away on the line. His class from previous preparations says he is a very good stayer. Ecuador was second and led them up and kicked strongly in the straight just found the winner too good. There is a win very close for him. Nettoyer finished third and was just average, running on soundly to line but never looked in winning contention and is proving hard to catch for punters. Of the rest Alward was disappointing and My Nordic Hero was much improved effort on pace. Going forward must stick with Our Century who has more wins in him if he continues these efforts this preparation.

Race 7 – Rygate Racecourse Design Handicap (1350m)

Note – Tougherthantherest who was first up for the Waller yard and enjoyed a nice run throughout and dint have to go around a horse got the chocolates in a tight finish over Special Missile who sat second in the run chasing the good speed set by the leader Peacock. He was well backed and was a good effort on speed. The race favourite who was a bit easy in betting Serene Miss ran on soundly from the tail to finish third. Sir Bacchus was a much improved effort catching the eye late hitting the line well. Peacock set a strong early speed and was found wanting the final 200m. Going forward the winner was good in his first start for the Waller yard and against a couple of smart types and Special Missile very solid on pace again.

Race 8 – Schweppes Handicap (1500m)

Note – Solo Mission another having his first start for the Waller yard saluted at big odds. Sitting well back on the rails he kept kicking along the fence to narrowly score over Bastia who sat wide in a midfield position and battled on well in the straight to run second. All Too Huiying led them up and kicked strongly in the straight to run a placing. Of the beaten runners Fuel was sound running and Kool Vinnie didn’t see daylight in the straight and I would be just forgetting that effort and the race favourite Awoke didn’t offer a lot in the straight and is one I would be checking the stewards report. Going forward I was impressed with Bastia effort out wide who fought on bravely in the straight to run second.

Race 9 – Ascot Restaurant Sprint (1200m)

Note – Very dominate victory to Crafty Cop to finish the card. Avdulla set him a light at the 800m putting a big space on the field and they couldn’t run him down in the straight winning by over three lengths in a very good performance. Race favourite Bon Amis who was well backed ran on soundly from a midfield position to run second however never looked a real winning chance. Much of the same can be said about Mana who got back and ran on soundly to the line at $26 and was good for something easier. I Am Serious offered very little in what was a disappointing effort. Going forward hard to not be with the winner in the future who although is limited was very good today winning well and will be winning again with another performance like that.
