Darren Weir spring racing

As we near spring, we’ll get an update on some of the big stars from each of the major stables.

Today we kick off with Victoria’s dominant trainer, Darren Weir.

Big Duke

The only sighting of the Duke of late was at a quiet session of jump-outs at Coleraine in late July, where Weir put some of his big guns through a thoroughly off-Broadway trial.

Big Duke took it easy, and foreman Jarrod McLean indicated he’d probably head to The Metropolitan in Sydney on September 29th, before heading to Melbourne.

Best available early odds:
Caulfield Cup: $61
Melbourne Cup: $81

Black Heart Bart

The old fella is back for spring, stepping out in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield last week.

He ran a solid fourth and although he may not have the big majors in his sights, the early features such as PB Lawrence and Memsie Stakes are on the radar.

Best available early odds:
Memsie Stakes: $12

Brave Smash

He’s back to The Everest for another crack in 2018 after running third last year. Strangely enough he’ll be running in the slot owned by Chris Waller, who doesn’t have a comparable available sprinter of his own.

Brave Smash also jumped out at Coleraine, and will have a couple of warm-up runs for The Everest – last year his path was the Chandler Macleod Stakes (Moonee Valley) and the Testa Rossa Stakes (Caulfield).

Best available early odds:
The Everest: $26
Manikato Stakes: $15
Darley Classic: $15

Actually managed to give Winx a race in the Cox Plate last year, and will be headed that way again. Jumped off last year in the PB Lawrence and Memsie.

Best available early odds:
Caulfield Cup: $26
Cox Plate: $15
Melbourne Cup: $51

Kings Will Dream

Mornington Cup winner who is the only Aussie-trained horse near the pointy end of Melbourne Cup betting. Has a guaranteed Caulfield Cup entry so will be on that path.

Best available early odds:
Caulfield Cup: $26
Melbourne Cup: $51

Nature Strip

The talk of racing after slaughtering Sunlight and the rest of the field in the Lightning Stakes at Morphettville. Connections desperately seeking an Everest slot.

Best available early odds:
The Everest: $11
Manikato Stakes: $7
Darley Classic: $8
