Caulfield Quaddie Preview

A huge day of Spring racing from Caulfield this Saturday with a whopping four Group 1 races scattered through the card.

Three of the four are featured in the Quaddie legs. Melbourne pro-punter Trevor Lawson brings you his Caulfield Quaddie tips.

Race 7 - Toorak Handicap (1600m)

Selections: 2, 5, 6, 8, 11, 12

JUNGLE CAT (2) charged home late last start over 1400m, winning the Rupert Clarke. He’s stepping to 1600m for the first time but was very strong late last. LAND OF PLENTY (5) got back and charged home late over the 1400m. He gets a similar draw here and will need a similar pattern. Looks better suited out to 1600m and a strong tempo should suit. DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR (6) put in a massive run last start over 1400m, in a quickly run race. He steps to 1600m here, where he’s not quite as effective. I AM A STAR (8) has won her past two, returning somewhere near her best form. She’s drawn out here and will do some work, but a chance at good odds. SIEGE OF QUEBEC (11) ran well two starts ago at 1400m. He didn’t have much luck in the Epsom, but can bounce back here and has a chance at nice odds. CLIFF’S EDGE (12) is fourth-up here at 1600m, which looks ideal. He got home hard last start over 1400m and looks ready for 1600m. He’s drawn wide but can get nice trail in. Is a chance at odds.

Race 8 - Caulfield Stakes (2000m)

Selections: 1, 2, 6, 10, 12

BENBATL (1) has a good winning record overseas and looks to race on the pace. He looks a quality horse. HUMIDOR (2) hit the line hard last start over 1800m. He looks good for 2000m and will be getting home hard. Both runs from HOMESMAN (6) this prep have been solid. He looks ready for 2000m and will roll forward. D’ARGENTO (10) ran well in the Epsom, getting home hard. He walked in at is at his only run at this distance, in Sydney in the autumn. UNFORGOTTEN (12) ran well in the Epsom, and well over this distance in the spring as 3YO filly. She’ll be be getting home hard here.

Race 9 - Caulfield Guineas (1600m)

Selections: 1, 2, 15

THE AUTUMN SUN (1) had no luck first-up resuming, then a terrific win at Rosehill over slightly shorter when he ran amazing sectionals for the race. Looks a potential star. NATIVE SOLDIER (2) has won two of his past three, including a terrific win last start. He goes to 1600 for the first time, goes to the front, finds his own tempo and will be hard to beat. OOHOOD (15) had a terrific win in the Flight Stakes in Sydney last start. It was her first win but she did have bank of consistent races behind her. Will be strong late.

Race 10 - Herbert Power Stakes (2400m)

Selections: 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

BIG DUKE (1) ran on nicely two starts back, then had no luck last start when held up in the straight. He should be ready to run a nice race here at his second try at the trip. GALLIC CHIEFTAIN (5) ran well second-up over 2000 in a quickly-run race. He gets to 2400m here where he has a solid record. LORD FANDANGO (6) won this race last year third-up. He’s second-up here coming off a nice closing finish in the Benalla Cup. Will be strong late, but may need one more run. YUCATAN (7) is an unknown who has sound Timeform ratings. James McDonald on board. BRIMHAM ROCKS (8) ran well in the Metrop when narrowly beaten. Will roll forward form wide barrier. RISING RED (9) put in a good effort last start. Steps to 2400m here third-up which is a slight negative, but well graded anyway. ODEON (10) is going terrifically this prep. Steps to 2400m, only run at this distance was in SA derby as a 3YO. Looks ready to tackle this trip.
