Moonee Valley Quaddie Preview
A big weekend of Spring racing action ahead at Moonee Valley, headlined by Winx vying for her fourth straight Cox Plate.
Pro-punter Trevor Lawson brings you his Moonee Valley Quaddie preview.
Race 7 - Crystal Mile (1600m)
Selections: 1, 2, 8, 9
IT’S SOMEWHAT (1) is racing consistently. Comes back in trip here, ran third in this last year. PRIZED ICON (2) covered plenty of ground last start. Comes back in trip and has better draw here. CLIFF’S EDGE (8) had no luck last start when had to overwork in high-speed race. Fifth run in here, should be ready to run to best. SIEGE OF QUEBEC (9) is racing consistently. Good run in Group 1 Toorak.
Race 8 - Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m)
Selections: 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 10, 13, 14
Metrop winner PATRICK ERIN (2) rated fairly well. Only has to hold rating here. EGG TART (3) has a reasonable record once out to staying trips. Looks ready for this distance now. THE TAJ MAHAL (6) put in a solid run here two runs back then took off early last start. Can bounce back here. LORD FANDANGO (7) worked home okay last start behind tearaway winner. Third-up here this distance, looks target race. TRAP FOR FOOLS (9) is racing well. Missed a run last week when late scratching, but has run well with gaps between races before. LIBRAN (10) is a stayer progressively improving with each run. Narrowly beaten in this last year. TOSEN BASIL (13) is a hard horse to assess. Well beaten first-up, beaten an inch second-up, then well beaten again last start. Not sure which one turns up, but want on my side. VENTURA STORM (14) wasn’t suited last week in the Caulfield Cup. Has reasonable figures at staying trips, and racing okay this prep without winning. Well graded here.
Race 9 - Cox Plate (2040m)
WINX (6) is going for her fourth Cox Plate, and only has to return similar figures to past years to have a clear class edge here.
Race 10 - Drummond Golf Vase (2040m)
Selections: 1, 4, 5, 13
Sydney galloper ARAMAYO (1) is racing well, and put in a terrific run in the Spring Champion Stakes. That form looks hard to beat. DEALMAKER (4) ran well second-up, narrowly beaten. Battled last start jumping to 2000m. Drier track and second run at the distance may be more suitable. SAVOIE (5) had a terrific win two starts ago by a big margin, then went too quick in front last start. Can bounce back here. The filly VERRY ELLEEGANT (13) is on the backup from last week when winning over 2000m. Should hold rating here.
