Derby Day Quaddie Preview

Melbourne Cup week kicks off this weekend at Flemington, and pro-punter Trevor Lawson brings you his Derby Day Quaddie tips.

Race 6 - Empire Rose Stakes (1600m)

Selections: 1, 2, 3, 9, 13, 14, 15

I AM A STAR (1) is a consistent mare who won this race as a three-year-old and gets the run of the race here. INVINCIBELLA (2) out in a terrific run here two starts back over the shorter trip, then was slightly flat last start. Can run better here. SHILLELAGH (3) won the mile race this day last year. Ran well two starts back in the Epsom. SHUMOOKH (9) had an easy win last start over slightly shorter trip. Maps to lead here, is slight query at 1600m but has solid claims OOHOOD (13) is a quality three-year-old who won the Flight Stakes, then got too far back in the Caulfield Guineas before rattling home late. SEABROOK (14) put in a terrific run last start in the Thousand Guineas when the blinkers went on, hitting line hard. Looks like can step again. AMPHITRITE (15) is unbeaten this prep. Improved every start and had a huge win in Thousand Guineas coming from last.

Race 7 - Victoria Derby (2500m)

Selections: 1, 2, 7, 10, 12

THINKIN’ BIG (1) won easily last start over 2000m at Caulfield. Should run the trip. ARAMAYO (2) defeated Thinkin’ Big two starts ago, then had too much ground to cover at Moonee Valley in forgive run. Can bounce back here SAVOIE (7) had a good run last week in the Vase. Nice prep leading into this. Can roll forward here and negate the barrier early. CHAPADA (10) is an improving three-year-old who ran well over 2000m last start. Can hold rating here. FAROOQ (12) put in a big effort in Derby trial, fought on terrifically late. Looks to have more to give.

Race 8 - Kennedy Mile (1600m)

Selections: 1, 2, 3, 4, 11, 13, 16, 17

HARTNELL (1) won well in the Epsom, then hit the line well in the Toorak. Only has to hold that form here. LE ROMAIN (2) is an honest Sydneysider who will be thereabouts COMIN’ THROUGH (3) won well first-up then rated okay second-up. Slight excuses past two, has good record this distance. LAND OF PLENTY (4) powered last start in quickly-run Toorak, will be strong late. CLIFF’S EDGE (11) is on the quick back-up here. Racing well and can hold rating. SIRCCONI (13) produced huge figure last start in first run for new trainer. Rated down off that, but still has claims from good barrier. PEACEFUL STATE (16) was never likely last start when never in race. Good record this distance, blinkers go on again, looks target race. BEST OF DAYS (17) ran well two starts back, then slightly disappointing last start in dead heat. Gets blinkers on, drawn well, only has to hold here.

Race 9 - Begonia Belle Stakes (1100m)

Selections: 2, 4, 6, 7, 9

SNITTY KITTY (2) ran well first-up, then had a bit go wrong second-up. First time down the straight but has claims in tough race. I AM EXCITED (4) got home hard late when got to the outside last start. Inside barrier a slight concern but will hit line hard. RESIN (6) is an improving type and produced a big figure at Randwick. Has solid claims. FROM WITHIN (7) had a terrific win leading all the way at Caulfield over this distance. Maps to go wherever she likes. SHE KNOWS (9) ran very well last start at Caulfield. Has had one start down the straight prior and went on wrong side of the track. Good record this distance.
