Victorian pro-punter Trevor Lawson, fresh from his win on Cross Counter in the Melbourne Cup, previews the next big Group 1 feature – Thursday’s Kennedy Oaks.

Put A Line Through…

There’s plenty here that just don’t have the class for this. Dark Confidant (7), Miss Moana (8), Maracaibo (9), Scamper (10) and Zapurler (11) are out of their depth. I’ve also ruled out Exclusively Ours (13), Miner’s Miss (14) and Lesedi (15).

The Contenders

#1 Amphitrite
(Darren Weir / Craig Williams) Barrier 5

Backs up from Saturday when had no luck at all. Big win in Guineas and is jumping significantly in distance, but Mosheen did similar and won by a margin. The class filly in the field and doesn’t have to run up to her Guineas performance to be good enough here.

#2 Aristia
(Ellerton & Zahra / Damian Lane) Barrier 4

Ratings improved when out in distance. Ran well two starts back at Caulfield, then strong though the line in the Wakeful. Likely to run the trip.

#3 Qafila
(Hayes & Dabernig / Jim Crowley) Barrier 10

Well beaten behind open class mares two starts back, but good effort hitting the line well on Saturday in the Wakeful.

#4 Verry Elleegant
(Darren Weir / John Allen) Barrier 13

Has over-raced badly last two starts. Suited by the fast pace at Caulfield when over the top of them late, but not suited by the slow pace on Saturday. Drawn wide, will get back which may make it hard.

#5 Greysful Glamour
(Mark Newnham / Tim Clark) Barrier 1

Terrific win here over 1800m, then dropped out when sitting handy on a strong pace at Caulfield last start. Can improve here.

#6 Sizzleme
(Cindy Alderson / Luke Currie) Barrier 14

Had every chance past two starts. Drawn out here and probably goes forward from barrier. Unlikely to turn the tables on last two starts.

#12 Collectable
(Robbie Griffiths / James McDonald) Barrier 11

Got back a long way last start and ran on strongly. Gets James McDonald on and has a rough chance.

Verdict

As long as Amphitrite stays the trip, she’s the class horse here and should prevail. Betting-wise, I also think Greysful Glamour is slight overs in a race where many can be ruled out.
