Victoria Handicap 2022: Trevor Lawson’s preview

Track The rail comes out to 3m from last Saturday. It shouldn’t make too much difference to how it plays.

Speed It should be genuinely run with the big field. Imperal Lad, Bermadez and Streets of Avalon will take it up.

AYRTON [$3] resumes here off a 217 day break where he had a spider bite. The market will be a guide to his fitness. He certainly doesn’t have to run to his best to be the one to beat. Maps to get a good run.

KISSONALLFORCHEEKS [$4.80] ran a monster figure for me at her first Victorian start. She didn’t handle the wet last start in the Doncaster. She’s better suited here back at this trip. Great chance for mine.

BERMADEZ [$9.50] is racing well and maps to roll forward here. This looks to be his best trip and I give him a good chance.

I AM SUPERMAN [$10] is better suited here back in trip after the Golden Mile. He maps to get a good run and is a good chance at double-figure odds.

STREETS OF AVALON [$13] returned to his best last start. He has a superb at this track and distance, where he’s a multiple G1 winner having won the 2020 Futurity Stakes and the 2021 CF Orr Stakes, and also won this race in 2019 He maps to get a good run and has a chance at the price.

CROSSHAVEN [$18] is finding it hard to win these days, but is better suited here back to this trip after the Golden Mile. The wide barrier is a concern.

FOXY FRIDA [$20] Is racing well, but will get a long way back here from the barrier and will be giving a lot of good horses a big start. Prefer others.

SUPERIUM [$21] is racing well too, and ran alright in the Hareeba, but I have a query over strong 1400m. Rough chance.

ARAMAYO [$26] I’m willing to forgive the first-up run on wet track. He’ll be fitter here, but hasn’t won for a long time and is drawn to get back.

HI STRANGER [$26] is racing well is another who’s better suited back to 1400m after the Golden Mile. Rough chance.

POLAND [$31] is a horse can never get short enough to be on. He ran okay last start at Bendigo. Another rough chance.

It’s a big field and for mine, there’s, quite a long tail. I think the rest of these are outclassed, and I can’t see them being good enough to win: DR DRILL [$101], KAHMA LASS [$31], INVERLOCH [$91], BLACK SAIL, [$67], SKYMAN [$31], IMPERIAL LAD [$41], EXCELIDA [$41] and TOKORANGI [$101].

Betting strategy

I agree with the order of the market and have Ayrton (my price is $3.60), Kissonallforcheeks ($5.50) and Bermadez ($11) as the first three. As you can see, they’re all slightly shorter than my price at the moment, so we’ll wait to raceday… they’re not a long way off my price and we should be able to get on at least one of them.
